NORTH Hobart's Zac Mastrocola will investigate undergoing the radical LARS surgery to fix his knee.
NORTH Hobart's Zac Mastrocola will investigate undergoing the radical LARS surgery after requiring a second knee reconstruction in as many seasons.
After injuring his knee during the 2009 pre-season, Mastrocola, 20, was playing in just his second senior game when he reinjured the same knee in last Sunday's loss to Lauderdale.
Demons coach Clinton Brown said their worst fears were confirmed.
"He has had to have a full reconstruction again as he's torn the grafting," Brown said yesterday.
"He's going to have a look to see if he can have the LARS done, depending on how much damage is done. But he is looking at a full reco either way.
"It is unfortunate but he's still young. He's got that on his side. Hopefully he'll get that right and be injury-free for the rest of his career."
The LARS technique uses a ligament made of industrial-strength polyester fibres to replace the torn natural ligament. It has been used successfully by Sydney's Nick Malceski, Port Adelaide's David Rodan and Clarence's Matthew Geappen.
The Demons were deplorable last week against the previously last-placed Bombers, losing by 25 points, but Brown is expecting a better showing against eighth-placed Hobart at North Hobart today.
"We have got a bit of Jekyll and Hyde about us at the moment," Brown said.
"Against the teams below us we tend to struggle.
"It is just an attitude thing that we've really talked about in the last couple of weeks and hopefully we can fix it this week.
"We've had a look at our mid-range players this week, the 20 to 23-year-olds who have played 50 to 100 games.
"We've put a bit of acid on them, it is time for them to step up and take the lead of the club, not
