Wasteful Magpies punished by efficient Roos
April 6th 2010 15:02
Glenorchy have been made to pay in thier opening clash against Arch Rivals Clarence, the hope of a close Grand Final replay was blown away after half time as the Roos slammed on a series of unanswered goals that left the Magpies struggline. Injuries to players like Sean Browning, Jimmy Webster, and later in the game the rest of theri bench just left the game wide open for Clarence to win 18.14.122 to Glenorchy 11.8.74. Cameron Thurley would later pop up in the last quarter to boot 3 goals, he joined playing coach Brett Geappen, new recruit Trent Standen with 3. Matthew Drury, Josh Green, and captain Nick Paine all booted 2, while French, Savage and Baker managed 1 each.
For the Magpies Jaye Bowden was the standout with 4 goals, one of which was the goal of the day, he also would get mark of the day and one of the Magpies bests. Other Glenorchy goal scorers was Jonathon Bowring with 2, both of which in the first quarter of the game, David Hunt 2, Zac Webb 2, Darcy, and Corbett all with singles. Jaye Bowden was one of the bests for the Magpies. behind the likes of Dan Muir, Jade Hodge, Nathan Matthews, Mark Corbett and before he was injured Jimmy Webster. Brayden Webb in the second quarter for the Magpies allowed them some run through the midfield.
Glenorchys forward line really didn't fire as well as expected, but they were unable to get much of the ball, Glenorchys deliver into the forwardline wasn't the best throughout the game, some would say that Glenorchy were very wasteful, which was pretty accurate as they played around with the ball and were not direct. Clarence were able to beat the Glenorchy backline with ease, Glenorchy were clearly missing some experienced heads there, Ben Curley is traveling overseas and Shayne Moles was not playing even though he was named.
Clarence managed to go from their backline to their forward line without any problems at least 3 times throughout the game, punishing Glenorchy's bad kicking, bad disposal, and they were just too good for the runners up in the Grand Final from last season. Glenorchy again appear to struggle at Bellerive Oval, something that will no doubt be addressed by Glenorchys coach Ben Reid and his assistants ahead of the clash with the Tigers in Round 2.
Jarryd Collidge too could be in trouble with a hit on Matthew Drury late in the game, even though a report was not made on game day, talk around the game was it was pretty reckless and required the Clarence player to leave the ground. A minor push and shove match spilled out there was nothing serious, there has been a lot of ill feeling between the two clubs over the years, but nothing managed to break out in a serious nature.
