GLENORCHY has demanded an unreserved apology for criticism of the club in last Saturday's State League football Record.
On page two of the weekly publication, AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade gave his "personal overview" of the 10 TSL clubs and how they have performed this season.
Pies president Steve Allie said he was inundated by furious fans at Glenorchy's game at Lauderdale last weekend when they read negative comments about their club.
"Before I even read the Record I had people coming up to me complaining about it," Allie said yesterday. "They were incensed and as a club we are absolutely insulted.
"We have demanded an unqualified apology."
North Hobart also copped criticism but as annoyed as Demons coach Clinton Brown was about it, he felt Glenorchy had more reason to be upset.
"Scott's comments towards Glenorchy were disgusting given off field they are probably ahead of everyone in the state," Brown said.
"They've had facility upgrades, financially they're doing well and they're about to get new lights.
"Their ground is probably going to be the best in the state outside Aurora Stadium, so to say that is a bit harsh."
Wade's comments about Glenorchy were that: "Glenorchy don't seem to be a 'happy club' on or off the playing field and my perception is that they aren't sure where or what they want to be as a club."
About North Hobart he wrote: "It appears the Demons have enough talent to beat anyone. However, they don't seem to have the condition or courage to run out games."
Brown said he would show those comments to his players as incentive going into their final-round clash with Glenorchy at KGV tomorrow.
"Scott's entitled to his opinion. Maybe he's seen the games where we have been run over the top of," Brown said. "It's a shame he's said these things publicly, bagging his own product. It's a bit like the owner of Kelloggs saying that Kelloggs taste like s..t.
"Maybe he should have taken up some of the media training they offered the coaches at the start of the year."
Glenorchy is eagerly awaiting this week's Record.
"Our board has demanded an apology in the Record this week," Allie said. "We've also asked for evidence to substantiate the claims he made about us not being a happy club on or off the field, because that simply is not true."
Up North, Devonport was unhappy with Wade's assessment of its club in saying: "Are they good enough. I believe they are. However, I doubt they are fit enough to go the distance."
Wade said he never intended to upset the clubs, and has apologised to Glenorchy.
"I have apologised in this week's Record and in writing to the club," Wade said.
