Veteran set to break record

Justin Harvey is set to break the games record for Hobart this weekend.
THE uncertainty of reserves football beyond 2010 for the 10 State League clubs could see Hobart record-breaker Justin Harvey play his final match for his beloved Tigers this weekend.

Harvey will line up for his 288th match against Launceston at the TCA on Saturday, taking him past club great Kerry Wilson.

However, having played 12 of his 14 matches this year in the reserves, Harvey could be left on the sidelines at season's end, with AFL Tasmania deciding to only run seniors and colts competitions in the future.

The colts will be restricted to mainly under-18 and under-21 players, meaning veterans who miss senior selection would be left watching from the sidelines.

It is a situation which leaves Harvey, who grew up supporting the club, pondering his future despite feeling like he has a couple of more seasons left in the tank.

"It's a great honour. I've supported the club since I was a child and to break [the games record] is a great feeling," he said yesterday.

"I'd like to hopefully keep playing for another few years. It is partly dependent on what happens with the competition next year and which way the club wants to go.

"It's one of the questions at the moment with each club and how they are going to work the competition next year.

"We have a lot of great clubmen who play seconds ... and when guys weigh up at the start of the season whether it is worthwhile going to play for that club, I'm not sure how it will work."

The day will be even more special for the club, with the Tigers to play in a heritage jumper representing Cananore.

Following World War II, Cananore which was inducted in the AFL Tasmania Hall of Fame this year became Hobart.

Tigers coach Graham Fox confirmed Harvey will break the record in the seniors, with the stalwart to return to the fold following three solid showings in the reserves.

"He'll be part of the side," Fox said.
