SUMMARY
The Tasmanian State League this season kicks off with a Hobart City rivalry, as the Tiger and the Demons battle it out at the TCA Ground on Good Friday. The Tigers in a disappointing season last season managed to claim 2 victories over the Demons, one of which was Round 18 heading into the 2009 finals which saw the Demons bow out after a loss to the evtual premiers Clarence. Hobart and North Hobart have both managed to pick up some good players of the summer. North Hobart bring back Joe Arnold to the side from interstate, and the Demons also picked up former Magpie and Devil Nathan Street, and the Demons picked up a few players from the Dockers, coach Clinton Brown, Billy-Jo Jackson, Zeke Gardam, and Jesse Wells. The Tigers bring in Sam Hall, Brendon Johnson, Tom Friend, Zeb Graham and couple of others.
The Tigers have hopes that this season, will be the season they return to the finals and maybe challenge for a flag that they have not won since the SFL flag they won back in 1999.
The Tigers managed to upset the Demons heading into the 2009 Finals season, in their last game for the season Hobart won Hobart 13.9.87 def. North Hobart 7.9.51 the Tigers are going to look at this and hope they can put some doubt into the mind of the Demons. The Demons, they have a new coach, some very good new recruits and they are going to hope that getting in a player of Nathan Street's abilities, and getting Wells, Jackson, Gardam, and Brown from Burnie it will make the Demons a flag threat this season.
The Easter long weekend sees some big clashes, the Grand Final replay with arch rivals, Coastal rivals battling it out in Devonport, and Hobart City Rival battling it out, what more could you want in a big Round 1? Well for these teams it would be a big win to open their seasons.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Nathan Street (North Hobart) – A big recruit for the Demons behind the other few that the Demons managed to pick up over the Summer break, the former Devil has spent the last year at WA club South Fremantle and he returns surprisingly to the Demons, some would have thought a return to Glenorchy for Street. He has the experience, and the talent that the Demons are going to need this season, with the loss of James, Geappen, and a few others this season.
Heath Neville (Hobart) – Drafted to Melbourne from Clarence, Neville has had a terrible run of injuries which plagued his AFL career, he plays his first game in 2 years this week, there were many players that could have been picked for the Tigers, but he's one to keep an eye on as he makes his hard fought return to football.
QUESTION MARKS
The Tigers are hoping to play finals this season, and with the ins they have, they could almost get there, but first they have to tackle the Demons who they have had the best of last season, can this continue? Heath Neville playing his first game for the club, and first game in 2 years could be a worry, and a risk, could he pull it off and have a big impact this season?
The Demons are under a new coach, and have a few new recruits, the Demons managed to sneak home in a thriller in their round one clash last season, can they do it a bit easier this time, or are the Tigers going to keep on with their dominate ways over the Demons?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
North Hobart are a talented outfit, and have a lot of talented injected into this side this season, they should be a top 3 side, challenging for the flag alongside southern rivals Glenorchy and Clarence and this game is going to asee the Demons start off with a win. The Tigers are a small chance even though I do not think they are going to win, they will be buoyed by the fact they have the wood over the Demons in the new Tasmanian State League. The class of the Demons additions should see them home in this encounter, being at the TCA Ground it could be pretty close, for me though the Demons are going to get over the line.
