Sharks in killer form

DODGES Ferry confirmed its place at the top of the SFL ladder with a percentage-raising win over the Central Hawks at Bothwell yesterday.

After a shaky first half, the Sharks shifted into top gear to cruise home with a 19.9 (123) to 10.6 (66) dusting of the Hawks.

Neither side could find a goal until the 10-minute mark in the first quarter when a flurry of goals from the Sharks was responded to in turn by the Hawks.

A goal after the siren gave the home side a two point lead for the next term.

Although keeping their opponents to a solitary behind in the second, Dodges Ferry failed to capitalise and only managed a modest 11-point margin at half-time.

From that stage on, nothing the home side tried could stop the Sharks from taking the win.

The half was characterised by the visitors stopping the Hawks' forward momentum. Ty Little and Zac Waller kept their strong form going and created plenty of opportunities.

Moments of brilliance, like a sensational high-flying mark from Michael Conolon who delivered it to a one-handed mark from Luke Browning on the goal line, were few and far between for the Hawks.

Glendon Bentley was a rock in Dodges Ferry's forward line, kicking six goals for the match.

Despite the 57-point margin, Dodges Ferry coach Danny Ling was disappointed with the effort his side put in, although happy with the win.

In an ominous sign for other sides heading towards the finals, Ling told his players that unless they were in hospital, they would be at training.

"I thought our use of the footy was terrible in the first half, we were turning the ball over far too much, particularly by hand. A lot of handballs were missing targets," Ling said.

The win puts Dodges Ferry on top of the ladder by percentage over New Norfolk, who had a bye. In other matches, Kingborough killed Lindisfarne 24.14 (158) to 10.8 (68) and Huonville absolutely trounced Triabunna 57.20 (362) to 0.3 (3).
