The board of the Southern Football League last night accepted an application by the Glenorchy Football Club to return to the SFL next season. Following AFL Tasmania’s recent decision that there will be no Reserves team playing in the State League next year, Glenorchy approached the SFL with a proposal to have Seniors, Reserves and Under 18’s play in the SFL from 2011. Our application was first considered at the SFL board meeting held in July and following that meeting, we were required to submit details about player numbers and likely effect on other club’s in our zone.
At last night’s meeting after a lengthy debate on further information, the Board agreed that Glenorchy’s return to the SFL would go ahead in 2011. SFL President – Paul Harriss said “There will be some very stringent requirements attached to Glenorchy’s return to the SFL, including controls on player transfer from the State League and financial considerations in the event that Glenorchy leaves the SFL again inside ten years.
Our board quite understandably has memories of the disruption to the SFL when the Statewide competition fell over some years ago and Glenorchy, North Hobart and Clarence were accepted into the SFL but then walked away with the introduction of the current State League”, Harriss said. “But the board accepts the very genuine application submitted by Glenorchy and the SFL is confident the move will be good for community football in the south”.
