Season Ahead
The Magpies are coming off that heartbraking Grand Final loss, another loss in a Grand Final to Clarence, the Magpies have had a terrible time of it at Bellerive Oval against the Roos for years now, but they seemed to steam the tide and have started to win there, but last season, the past horrors of Bellerive against the Roos came back when it mattered most. It ended 2-2 last season the head to head Glenorchy managed to hold off the Roos at KGV both times, and the Roos held the Magpies at bay at Bellerive Oval.
Arch rivals again do battle this time to kick off the season in a Grand Final replay, and with the summer finally over and the waiting game, the Pies are ready to fire. The Magpies were expected to lose not only captain Shane Piuselli, but also Shayne Moles and Jaye Bowden, and Bryce O'Garey, but good news for the Magpies Bowden, O'Garey and by the looks of their team list Moles have all stayed. The Magpies lost Ryan Harwood to the Brisbane Lions, the same side that drafted Aaron Cornelius the season before.
The Magpies have a couple of unknowns this season, one of which is the addition of Michael Darcy to their forward line, the veteran of the SFL comes to the Magpies from Cygnet and he is going to have to prove himself with the big boys, he played for the South against the North back in 2003, and with good deliver he could be one of the top forwards, partnering with young Marcus Parker, Nathan Matthews and David Hunt as well. Another unknown will be how the Magpies go without Shane Piuselli, while they still have Jaye Bowden, who was a name that was supposedly also leaving, he was one of, if not the best player for the Magpies last season, the Magpies have also managed to retain Bryce O'Garey as well. The Mercury is implying that Clinton French has stayed with the Magpies as well, but as far as other reports go he has departed for Kingborough.
Glenorchy has lost Kaye, Glenn, and Dykes, although Dykes was never able to fully break into the side, they are going to welcome back into the side David Kameric who was out injured after he had injured his knee. Glenorchy are a young side and have used this to their advantage late in the season they went on a winning streak, it came after a loss to the Tigers, the state of origin break came, and the Magpies ran home with 9 wins in a row, sadly, their first loss since the break came with them losing the Grand final.
The addition of Jade Hodge as well could be a plus for the Magpies, during the pre-season Luke Potter booted 7 goals for the Pies against the Northern Bombers in their last practice match. Glenorchy have also brought in Byron Howard as an assistant coach, which can also add to their forward line if he was to take some of the Magpies young forwards under his wing. The Magpies should be up there again this season, experts have them finishing top 3, with some expecting a premiership from the young Magpies, there is no doubt that the loss of Piuselli was one that was going to leave a hole in the Glenorchy midfield but they still have a few options there.
Glenorchy's premiership hopes will rely on how their able to settle themselves, as seen last season they were giving away freekicks, and giving away 50's that lead to goal. By the time the Magpies settled late in the game, it seemed like the Grand Final was gone, but it took a goal from Jeromey Webberley to finally settle the game and declare the premiers Clarence.
Prediction
I am expecting the Magpies to be a contender this season, the loses of Piuselli and Harwood are going to be hard on them, but the Magpies have managed to recruit well and have a good young list there, with an addition to their coaching staff of Bryron Howard, and having the experience of Michael Darcy at the club the Magpies should be there abouts again, Glenorchy are going to rely on those young legs that managed to help them finish strong, iast season the Magpies lost their cool when it really counted, and took too long to start in the Grand Final, if they can fix this, they can go far in the finals and take the premiership. Glenorchy should finish in the top 3 again this season, they are going to battle the Roos for 1st with maybe the Roos claiming top spot late in the season.
But can this Magpie side win a flag? I believe they can, they had a few errors that lead to the premiership heading against the river to the Roos, freekicks were given to the Roos that lead to goals, some players lost their cool that lead to 50's being awarded against them, the Magpies could by the end of the season be battlign their arch rivals Clarence in another Grand final, but I am sure the Demons are going to have a say in this, they have also been doing some recruiting over Summer and look threatening.
