Season Ahead

Reigning Premiers Clarence open their season in the Grand final replay Monday Night at Bellerive Oval against Arch Rivals Glenorchy, both teams have traded wins and loses against each other last season, with the Roos finally getting on top of them in the Grand Final. The Roos managed to jump the Magpies from the start of the Grand Final and in the end a goal to now drafted Jeromey Webberley saw Clarence crowned the Tasmanian State League premiers. Clarence came through the finals meeting North Hobart, Devonport, and Burnie, before their clash with the Dockers the Roos had an easy run in, spanking both the Dees, and Magpies at Bellerive Oval, the Devonport came under fire by Magpie coach Errol Bourne saying it should have been played away from Bellerive Oval.

In the grand scheme of their season, it was never going to matter, the Roos were just too good on the day, and then went on to face the Dockers, who were racing away with the season, and then they were pipped for top spot by Glenorchy, and then their horror start to the finals ended with coach Plapp lining up for goal, a goal would have seen them into the Grand Final, but he missed sending the Roos into the Grand Final.

The Roos are no mugs when it comes to playing in the Grand Final, throughout the 1990s they were the team to beat, and then the last decade they were there more often then not, they last battled the Magpies in the 2007 Grand Final, where the Magpies broke through for a big win, before that the Roos had laid claim to the honors against them in big finals.

But this season the Roos have lost a lot of experience with Dutton, and Setchell retiring, but they have managed to do some fine recruiting nabbing Brennan Savage from Launceston, and Matthew Geappen from North Hobart, both former Devils. They have also added Standen from Sorell, Whitelaw returning to the state from Geelong club Queenscliff, and adding O'Neal (Dodges Ferry), Bailey (Oatlands-Mariners) the added class makes them you would think the team to beat, as there was already a lot of talent there with Matthew Drury, Cameron Thurley, coach Brett Geappen, and captain Nick Paine, as the main faces there now and also Sharman, and Cameron Blight who are also experienced campaigners.

The Roos are going to be a team that every team is going to have to find a way to beat, they and a couple of other southern clubs are going to be pretty hard to beat this season, should everything fall their way and injuries do not play apart in the season ahead.

Will the loses of Dutton, and Setchell be a massive difference to the Roos? It might well have been before the recruits that the Roos had picked up, the Roos were fully ready to expect the loss of Webberley and maybe Archer. But the Roos have recruited well, and they are going to be a top 3 side this season, battling it out with both Glenorchy and North Hobart, the race to the 2010 Premiership is going to be a hot one, last season, before the season started Launceston were a clear favourite, this season Clarence takes that spot, good recruiting around a very good team, the Roos are going to be a top side.

It's hard to see the Roos missing the finals, if the Roos lose a few players through injury though, they could then experience some difficulties, Matthew Geappen will take a bit of time to get back to full fitness recovering from a knee injury that was supposed to almost end his career seeing him miss 2 seasons, successful surgery turned that around for him.

The Roos are going to hope to get the most out of their defenders mostly Blight and new recruit Savage, both former Devils, and both are very experienced but they also have Thurley they can play in the midfield and drift up forward, he could fill they void left by the departure of Dutton. Whitelaw and Geappen can see Thurley move forward, or see Drury move from Half Forward into the goal square for them.

Prediction

I am predecting the Roos to finish in the Top 3 this season, their lowest I think they are going to finish is 3rd, with Glenorchy and North Hobart around that area this season, maybe even Launceston. Clarence are a side they are going to be a tough challenge when you enter into September they have so much experience there, and while they have lost Dutton, and Setchell, as well as Archer and Webberley they have enough to cover them.
