SUMMARY
Traditional rivals battle on the hallowed turf of North Hobart Oval, a possible preview to the 2010 Grand Final, or at least North Hobart hopes it is, but they Demons are on shaky ground at the moment. They started off with a bang 4 wins and no loses and now they have hit the wall, a chance to go a game clear in second was blown when the Tigers came out under the lights of Bellerive and stole the points. Clarence well other then a few selection worries, some injuries here and there, life is pretty good on the Eastern Shore.
The Roos are looking unbeatable, and they are looking like going through the season unbeaten, but Clinton Brown and his Demons are standing in the way. News tonight that Robbie Devine will not be lining up for the Demons tomorrow, even though he was selected in the squad yesterday. Devine will fall 4 games short of the all time games record for the Demons, but he has been a great full forward for the Demons. The Demons will hope to win the game for their fallen veteran who leaves the game one of their best goalkickers, and having won a few premierships along the way with the red and blue.
Brett Geappen is on the march for 100 goals this season, he's already on 54 goals from the first 8 games of the season, with 10 to go, he should be able to break that ton with 2 games to spare. He's 23 goals in front of North Launceston's Darren Crawford, and a fair few goals ahead of Launceston's Brian Finch, so it's looking like he's pretty much got that Hudson Medal around his neck at the minute.
He's been partnered by Standen, and Savage this season, both have kicked a few goals, and the Clarence boys are really flying. Last week against Glenorchy Geappen booted 8, Standen booted 7, Standen in his first season of TSL football after coming back to the club. This game should be a rough and tough encounter with the Roos looking to go undefeated this season!
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Jessie Wells (North Hobart) – The former Docker has been a dangerous player for the Demons, being able to shut down forwards, and kick goals, and now that the Demons have welcomed some players back into the side, and are farewelling Robbie Devine they are going to need a guy to kick a bag of goals. They have sent him forward in the past and he has goaled, and they are playing him forward this weekend against the ever dangerous Clarence.
Trent Standen (Clarence) – 7 goals against arch rivals Glenorchy was another fine effort from Trent who after some time away from the club returned, Trent played juniors with the Roos before he left, and he's looking like a very handy pick up for the Roos, with an ability to play in various positions, and roles for the Roos. Just another one of those difficult players the Demons are going to need to try and stop this weekend.
QUESTION MARKS
The Demons after a winning streak has been up and down, and now they are facing another big test, the team that inflicted that first loss this season. With the recent record that the Demons have had, are they able to take back second place and bring the Roos back down to earth? Or are they going to lose another one and drop down the ladder?
Clarence eight wins in a row, can they really be beaten? North Hobart has beaten them at North Hobart last season, can the Demons on their home patch with the sad retirement of Devine get up?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Clarence are looking the goods this season for back to back premierships, and with a forward that is able to boot 8 goals and contiunally get out on the lead it's hard to see them not winning. Trent Standen popping up with 7 goals, Brennan Savage kicking goals, Josh Green back into the side from Mariners duties able to kick goals, Cameron Thurley able to play as a forward, a defender, and a midfielder, and Matthew Drury one of the states best Centre Half Forwards as well, when he is on fire the other teams just start to quiver just a little bit.
With the State of Origin game coming up against the Queenslanders every player out there is going to want to lift that little bit extra, but Drury has some very big named Centre Half Forwards to battle for the spot, he has Ben Reynolds from Devonport, and Bowring from Glenorchy, he will want to lift himself into the position to play for the State again, the former Devil also once played for North Hobart as well, so the Demons are going to hope they ruin his chances.
But let's not forget Matthew Geappen, he has not been the ball magnet that he was in 2009 for the Demons the toll of his knee injury would still be playing on his mind. North Hobart aren't out of this game though, they still Nathan Street who can play as a forward, and a midfielder, he's been selected down back this week. Zeke Gardam as well has been able to boot goals for the Demons this season, and there is the returning Sam Darley who was playing good football last season and will hope to cement his spot in the side.
But the Roos still have too many forward options, and are going to be too strong.
