SUMMARY

The battle of the Magpies sees Glenorchy make the trip up to Devonport to play their Northern Magpie rivals they have only played once since the old Statewide League and Glenorchy managed to walk away with the points on a very windy day. Devonport's season was looking bleak after Round 3, they had lost all 3 games and was playing away to Launceston at Windsor Park. The Magpies ended up winning in a very inaccurate display 7.18.60 to Launceston an accurate 6.7.43.

Glenorchy themselves have had a tough time of it this season, they have been playing a lot of young kids this season and have been going win-loss win-loss over the summer the Magpies lost Ben Curley who went over sees, Shayne Moles, Shane Piuselli, Clinton French, Andrew Nash, Joshua Dykes (Hobart) and Ryan Harwood to the Brisbane Lions. They come up against a tough ask in Clarence round one, the side that beat them by a goal on Grand Final day and it was a nightmare start to the season.

But Glenorchy bounced back against Hobart smashing them, a week later the Magpies played host to Lauderdale, a game most even I expected them to win, but on that day the Magpies would go down by 5 points, after a missed kick after the siren which could have seen the first draw in the new Tasmanian State League. Glenorchy travelled up to West Park and played their youngest side in 20 years, the last time they had played so many kids, Kim Excell was in change of the team. 26 points down early in the last the Magpies rallied to win by 20 points. The Magpies couldn't take that massive win into their game against North Launceston and were beaten, but against North Hobart, the team that are expected to be a Grand finalist, they got over the line, but the Magpies have been struggling the last two weeks, losing to Clarence and Launceston.

Glenorchy has unearthed an unlikely forward option with the loses of David Hunt, and Michael Darcy, Jade Hodge who came to the club via Leeton-Whitton in NSW went up forward and booted 4 goals for the Magpies in a loss against the Roos. Devonport has not had many problems lately former Wesley Vale played Clinton Viney has been popping up around the place to add another forward option, young Ryan Keep has been thereabouts as well, and surprisingly former Glenorchy & North Hobart player Scott Bennetts who came to the club after last year playing reserves last season has been getting amongst the goals. He has also been showcasing his acting abilities, so if football doesn't go where he wants to he can still find a career on Television after playing for free-kicks last weekend.

Ben Reynolds who booted 100 goals back in the NTFL for the Magpies has also been scoring goals as well, though his accuracy has been letting him down as well. Viney popped up in the third quarter against Hobart and finished with 4 goals, Bennetts booted five alongside Reynolds 2 weeks ago.

Both sides are going to play in tribute to Jim Manson who passed away last weekend, Manson was a Glenorchy legend, and Jim Manson's grandson Ben Brown currently plays for Devonport. This game should be a pretty close game, the Magpies have shared players in the past, having had players play for both sides. Right now Brad McDonald & Scott Bennetts being the current players to have played for both sides.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Scott Bennetts (Devonport) – A player that has really reinvented himself with the move to the North West Coast, some would say he had a bit of a bad attitude during his career at Glenorchy, when he was younger, he went to North Hobart, and was stuck in the reserves now Bennetts has managed to get himself into their senior side this season and has not been looking back, also a player to keep an eye on is Ben Reynolds who is battling for a spot in the Tasmanian state side with Jonathon Bowring, and Matthew Drury.

Jade Hodge (Glenorchy) – The young defender came to Glenorchy from Leeton-Whitton NSW after leaving New Norfolk, and he has shown he can play up forward as well, and if Michael Darcy and David Hunt do not get up for the Magpies he will be important again for them, most likely start in the back-line and then head up forward to kick some goals.

QUESTION MARKS

Devonport took a half to get into the game, and get over the top of the Bombers last weekend and had the same trouble against the Tigers before that, will the first half again become a problem for Devonport? Last season the Magpies had a drop off mid season, and ended up clinging onto their finals spot just, is history going to repeat?

Glenorchy has dropped out of the top six and have lost their last two games, and they are playing against a Devonport side that is in good form, can the Magpies sneak away with the points again in a low scoring affair like last season? Or is Glenorchy going to struggle yet again?

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Devonport at home will be the favourites for the clash, they are on a role and Glenorchy are on the decline well this season anyway, the Magpies took the game from the Bombers last week in the second half much like they did to Hobart before them. But Glenorchy has shown with their backs against the wall they can fight back and win they did that against the Dockers, and went they were not given a chance against Devonport last year they walked away with a hard fought tight win at Devonport Oval. But the Magpies have Viney, Bennetts, and Reynolds all firing, and Heazlewood working hard in the midfield, they have added Shaun McCrossen there as well.

It's tough to see the Magpies winning if they are again missing Hunt and Darcy both are under injury clouds, the Magpies are welcoming back Mariners' Josh Arnold and Matt Dilger, Jimmy Webster has been brought into the side as well and young Braden Barwick as well. The Magpies are developing towards a great side in the future with their array of young players.
But Devonport are looking like a real good finals contender and if the boys from Devonport win, they are a chance of being second at the end of the round, but they have to win, and North Hobart have to lose, and they have to also hope that North Launceston does not smack South Launceston as well.

PREDICTION

Devonport by 20 points
