SUMMARY
Two powerhouse clubs of their regions in 2008 meet in a game that is going to keep one side in the hunt for the finals and see one struggle to hold onto their place in the top 6. Last season when they met it was the much anticipated clash between the Southern and Northern Premiers which was meant to happen in October 2008 for the State Premiership, but due to lack of travel funding given to Launceston the game never happen but in the new TSL that was announced just after the Round 17 clash was made the season open, and it was a cracking game, a game that almost saw the Magpies come from behind against Launceston but the Blues managed to hold on.
Glenorchy are having an up and down season going W/L and the Blues are on a 3 game losing streak and were the last victim of the Roos last weekend, after starting promisingly they fell away and suffered a third straight loss. The Magpies managed to have a massive big last quarter which was kick started by Michael Darcy goaling, that was one of three goals the forward managed on the day. Another hard fought win from the young Magpies which sees them keep their season on track and able to hold their heads up after the loss to North Launceston the previous week.
Launceston are starting to find a form slump, the same form slump that almost saw them miss the finals last season, despite the win last season against the Magpies, Glenorchy has had the wood over the Blues in the old TFL, back when the Blues were known as the Raiders and only a young side in the league, now they are a more matured side, missing two key players, which they have tried to fill those holes with younger players. This match should be another cracker if history repeats it, and if the Magpies recent record of win/loss over the past few weeks, it could see the Blues break their losing streak at the home of the Magpies.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Nathan Matthews (Glenorchy) – The Magpies have a wealth of young talent at the club, and Nathan Matthews is one of them, and starting to come into his own as a senior player for the Magpies. Been one of the bests for the Magpies early, and continues to get better with age, along with Jaye Bowden, and others at the club, he's a talented player to keep an eye on for the future at the club.
Nathan O'Donoghue (Launceston) – Continuing the theme of young players at their bests for the club, O'Donogue has stepped up as an option as a forward, after a disappointing season last season with injury, the Blues have needed goal kickers, he and Brian Finch, as well as Gary Shipton have become options they have needed. The two young Nathans are going to be the future champions of their clubs, should they keep up their early season form!
QUESTION MARKS
It's been a mixed start to the season for the Magpies, when you are ready to write the boys from Glenorchy off they come out and they pull off a hard fought win, a team that has looked to go for homegrown young talent they are local, is their lack of big name imports going to be a thing that harms them later in the season? The Magpies have done their best to fill the holes left by French, Piuselli, Kaye, Glenn, Harwood & Curley if the Pies win, will this set them up for the rest of the season?
Launceston are on a bit of a downward spiral at the moment, 3 game losing streak, could be stretch to four should the Magpies win, can the Blues recover from this nose dive? Or are they going to keep Glenorchy's win/loss/win/loss record going another week?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Glenorchy are the form side, capturing the win against North Hobart on Mother's Day with their backs to the wall, and early on their season on the line, but after other club's lost it seemed they just needed the win to keep themselves going up in the right direction when they get some players back into the side. Last season when the state of origin break came the Magpies kick-started their season fully and headed up into first place, this season it seems unlikely that they are going to finish first, unless Clarence start to fall away in the second half of the season.
But the Magpies are always hard to beat at KGV Oval playing at their best, last season when they met the Blues they were a bit flat, and didn't come to play until late, the same could be said for their game against the Northern Bombers, just seemed that late on the Magpies made a challenge but they fell away again in the last. Glenorchy are going to hope to see Michael Darcy get in the goals, and get more of the ball, and to bring David Hunt into the contest as well. Jesse Crouch getting back into some form after injury too would be a big plus for the Magpies, the Magpies are also welcoming back Mark Corbett into the side, starting on the bench, with Dilger and Arnold back into the side as well. For the Blues they are welcoming back Brian Finch, Luke French, Tim Curwen, Joe Groenewegen and Adrian Finch, and Lonergan has been left out of the side.
The Pies should get home in a pretty close game, getting some good young talent back into the side and getting Corbett back as well, is going to be a massive plus for the Magpies, David Kameric is still a few weeks away, but he is back on the training track, so he will be a good addition to their backline alongside Hodge, Chandler, the O'Gareys, Dilger, Browning you can add Muir to that list as well coming off the bench there for the Magpies.
