SUMMARY
It's Mother's Day round, and what better way to finish it off with traditional rivals battling it out at the former heart of Tasmanian Football North Hobart Oval? Happy Mother's day to the mother's that are heading to North Hobart for the game, and any mother's that read taking the time to read the summary of this game this week. The Magpies last week managed to keep themselves in the game last week, even though they were not playing the best football for most of the game, but then the last quarter saw the Bombers mange to finish them off and take the points. The Demons continued their winning ways this season against Launceston, a season that has seen them only drop the one game and that was against their Eastern Shore rivals Clarence.
Those who have seen Tasmanian Football over the last few years have known that Glenorchy and North Hobart have had a fierce rivalry, a rivalry that in the 1990s saw the Demons topple the Pies at every chance they got, even knocked them out of their first finals in a few season in the mid 1990s. It seems almost fitting that former full forward of North Hobart Byron Howard would appear as the new assistant coach at the Magpies, he would break many Magpie hearts during his football career, now he is there to help assist the young Magpies in their journey's this season.
North Hobart have also a former Magpie in their camp, Nathan Street who returned home to Tasmania this season after spending time over in WA with South Fremantle. Glenorchy's last premiership, and the last Grand final of the former Southern Football League Premier League was against the Demons, the Magpies have had the best of the Demons in their encounters last season, winning both of them, and now with some talent missing the Magpies are hoping to add more headaches. For the Demons they have added some talent to their line up, as previously mentioned Nathan Street, they have Jesse Wells from Burnie, Clinton Brown, and Zeke Gardam all from Burnie, and they have two other recruits that are missing in action in Callen Dell, former Devonport player, and Billy-Jo Jackson who also came down from the Dockers,
Glenorchy has recruited but not many massive names, they have brought in Jade Hodge who came back from New South Wales, he used to play for New Norfolk, young star from the Kingbrough Football Club Trad Duggan, former Brighton youngster Jimmy Webster, and former past Glenorchy star Calum Garvey who comes back to the club after a stint in the OSFA. But the Magpies have injuries, and have also lost a lot of experience, the main loss has been Shane Piuselli who is now playing over in Victoria for Coburg, they have lost Jamie Kaye, and Chris Glenn both to retirement, and Shayne Moles isn;t there either, even though he has played this season, he's not there. Mark Corbett has recently left the club to go overseas, as has Ben Curley who was a big part of their defense.
Glenorchy has opted to not chase big experienced players, but to aim for development of young players, which will mean some short term pain for long term gain for Glenorchy, as for the Demons they have set themselves a team that could very well go for the TSL Premiership this season, they are a team that look damaging like the Demons of old.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Ken Hall (North Hobart) – The experienced former Essendon, and Tassie Devils midfielder has been in fine form for the Demons this season, was one of the best for the Demons last week against the Blues, and will be a big part of the game against the Magpies.
Jade Hodge (Glenorchy) – The young defender is in his first season of TSL football with the Magpies, and has been doing a very good job, one of a few that could hold their head up high last week, he managed to drive the ball out of the backline a few times, and collect the ball up the ground a bit as well. The Magpies' backline have a few headaches this week with Gardam, and Devine.
QUESTION MARKS
The Demons had their struggles last week against the Blues, and were rolled with ease against Clarence, they haven't had the perfect record they would like against Glenorchy, can they buck the trend and beat the Pies this week? Or are they going to suffer the past blues they managed to inflict on the Magpies?
Glenorchy have a few questions to answer this week, can their young team bounce back again from another loss, can their forward line which is under pressure fire, and is Michael Darcy really up to the standard required for the Tasmanian State League? Or is Michael Darcy just a bit unfit, and needs a run with the twos to get into a better shape?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
North Hobart have the cattle that are going to give the Magpies a run for their money, they are the 2nd favourites for the flag this season with their pick ups, and the young Magpies just have to get in there and have a fight for the ball and play their hearts out but they are going to fall short. Ken Hall is in good form, Cameron de Gooyer is going well, and Zeke Gardam has been in fine form for the Demons this season, even though last week he was quiet, veteran Robbie Devine, and Demon new comer Nathan Street both managed to goal.
Next season, the Magpies are going to blossom even mid season they are going to have Kameric back from injury, and a few other players back into the side from injury, and will most likely still see finals action, but they are not a contender this season, and are going to have to suffer a bit of short term pain, to get the long term gain which has been what they have done since their last flag of 1999, and that last flag before that.
Though with the Magpies going win-loss-win-loss, and their fighting spirit, who knows? They could come out and shock, they got behind against the Dockers and battle their way back in and won, last week, they kept in the game, but the last quarter it was too much for them. Stopping the Demons, and kicking a big enough score to win is just going to be beyond the Magpies, the Magpies will be boosted by the news that Matthew Muir is out, the Magpies would have hoped that a Devine or Gardam was missing this weekend. With a cloud over their forward line structure this season by some pundits, it would be interesting to see how the Magpies go against this massive test this weekend.
