SUMMARY
The last time they met was on a wet winters day at Bellerive Oval, where Launceston looked like they were going to win the game, but the Roos kicked a series of behinds to clinch the win by 1 point in an inaccurate kicking display. Fast forward to 2010 and Clarence are unbeaten on top of the ladder and looking more and more likely to go through the season without a loss. Launceston have had a mixed start to their season, having gone win/loss for the start and then they have captured two loses in a row.
Both clubs have only met once since the new TSL has started, but in the history of the Launceston Football Club in the Statewide League Clarence have beaten them in every game they have played, the then Raiders entered the league in 1994 and from there they have been beaten pretty easily by Clarence, the Raiders from Launceston would leave the then TFL back in 1997 to re-enter the NTFL in 1998, and from there they have not met the Roos in a roster game until last season.
Last season the former Raiders turned Blues were raging favourites for the TSL premiership, they faced Glenorchy in the season opener and got over the line, after the major problem with the State Premiership that was canned because of lack of funds going to the Blues at the time they showed in the season opener they could have made Glenorchy's day in October a bad one. But when they faced the Roos, it was a day where the rain came, and the goal accuracy, at least for the Roos, went missing and was replaced by behind, after behind, after behind.
Launceston were more accuracy only booting the 7 behinds on that wet day last season, but they were unable to get out to a match winning lead, which saw the Roos boot 10 behinds in a row to win by 1 point, it might have been a blessing for the Blues, if the Roos had have scored the goals it may have been a thumping at the hands of the eventual premiers. Now the roles are reversed the Blues are no longer the premiership favourites and some experts are expecting them not to really take much part in the finals, Clarence are now the unbackable favourites and look like they are going to again runaway with the season and claim back to back premierships.
It might be a new competition, but the early dominance of the Roos points back to the 1990s when they were easily the team of the decade, Launceston were the opposite, last season was their first ever statewide final even though they were a team that managed to become a bit of a powerhouse in their later years of the NTFL.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brett Geappen (Clarence) On track to boot 100 goals this season, Geappen has been a dangerous target up forward for the Roos, he is a man that the Launceston defenders are going to have to watch. This time last year, the man lining up in the goal square on the same side as him Brennan Savage was playing for the Blues, and if he was still in the Launceston team he would be the man that lines up on Geappen, but he's not and now the Blues have a headache!
Nathan O'Donogghue (Launceston) Had some injury trouble last season, and may have had a bit of form concern as well, the young Blue has emerged as possibly a replacement for their former spearhead in Derbyshire and the Blues are going to hope that he and Finch are going to team up and boot a bag each to beat the Roos, who look unstoppable right now.
QUESTION MARKS
The unstoppable Roos are looking like they are going to go the season undefeated no team seems to be able to beat them, can Brett Geappen boot 100 goals for the season? And will there be a team that are going to pop up and beat the Roos?
Launceston face their former defender turned forward Brennan Savage this week, they'd have loved him to have been lining up at either Full Forward ot Full Back this weekend, do they have enough there to stop Drury, both Geappens, Standen, and Whitelaw? Can they be the first team this season to take the points against the Roos?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Clarence are far and away the best side right now in the TSL, they have recruited well, but more then that they have managed to unearth a forward that if he keeps on scoring like he is will break 100 goals for the season, and take home the Peter Hudson Medal. Clarence has also managed to replace Dutton with two other forwards that are goaling as well, Brennan Savage who was brought in as a defender has been kicking goals, Trent Standen who went to Sorell after being a Roo in the junior years has been a handy goal sneak.
Even though Matthew Geappen has not been the ball magnet he was at North Hobart, he is doing enough there that sees him as a dangerous player, but the Roos just have so many players thay are going to show up and hurt you on the scoreboard and damage you with their ability to get the ball. It's almost like a broken record, but you have a former Devil in the side, doing the damage in the middle mixed with some youth, and you have a forward line that is able to dominate your defenders.
It's really hard to see where Launceston are going to win this game, the Roos have an experienced forward and backline that has a lot of talent, and a lot of ability, but every team can have an off day and Launceston are hoping at their home ground of Windsor Park that they can meet the Roos on a very off day and claim a win here. But I am not seeing where the win is going to come from, if Geappen isn't firing you have Savage, and then if he is not doing it you can push Thurley into the forward line, more Matthew Geappen into the middle, need another defender? Throw Savage down back, or even Thurley again can drift down there, so many different options for any position the Roos are a very well oiled machine.
