SUMMARY
It's been a crazy start to the season for the Dockers, over summer they had an exodus, and everyone was ready to predict them for the spoon, and then the unthinkable happened, a tight win against Devonport in Round 1 with assisted thanks from Brentayn Milverton that crossed over to the Dockers from Devonport, and another two wins had a few supporters ready to believe the Dockers were an outside chance. But now the Dockers have hit the wall, 3 loses in a row, starting with the Northern Bombers.
The Dockers looked like they were about to turn it around against Glenorchy they were leading them at the break and were leading by 26 in the last quarter, but the Magpies came home with a wet sail and won by 19 points. Last week Hobart managed to blow the Dockers away, in a display that has left a few stunned. Blair Kean booted 6 goals against the Dockers and now there are a few questioning their start to the season.
South Launceston on the other hand started with a win against Lauderdale, and loses from there on, the Dogs are a young side that are under new coach former North Launceston legend Dale Chug a few experienced players left over summer, and the young players that they picked up have the future ahead of them, in yet another case of a team going young to build a future star team. The Dogs have never participated in a finals series in the TFL, they along with Launceston have a history of underachieving in the Statewide League. The Dogs last won a premiership in 1999, the same year that coach Dale Chugg played ina losing Tasmanian State Football League Grand Final against Glenorchy.
The one thing that is on the side of the Dogs is, they have had a previous record for upsetting sides, and Burnie are on a losing streak, a streak that has seen them lose by their season high losing margin of 80 points, the Dockers held the Dogs to the lowest TSL score last season. This could be the chance the Dogs need to get over the line and claim their second win of the season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brentyn Milverton (Burnie) – Has been a regular in the best for the Dockers this season, since crossing over from coastal rivals Devonport, he was the one of a few good things to happen to the Dockers during the summer months, he is going to be a key for the Dockers against the Dogs this weekend.
Scott Towns (South Launceston) – One of the key components to the Dogs midfield, he was one of their bests against the Magpies and will be an important part of their chances of winning this game this weekend.
QUESTION MARKS
The Dockers can see their season at a crossroads this week, they need a win to steady a ship that's struggling in the waters, are they going to sink or swim against a team they have smashed in the past?
South Launceston known to upset teams in a close game, they piped the Demons, Blues, and Magpies last season, can the young Dogs do it again? Or are they destined to be down the bottom with just one win?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
The Burnie Dockers started with a bang winning a couple of games, but since then they have been losing and have unable to steady themselves, even a game they had close in the bag was lost, but they are taking on a younger side that haven't got the players that are going to beat Burnie this week. Last season sure the Dogs managed to catch 3 sides asleep at the wheel and play 3 good games, but this season seems to be another year of pain for a Dogs point of view.
But for Dogs fans they can look at the brightside they have brought some talented young players from the junior leagues into their side, and when they mature, and add a couple of established named to this list, the skies the limit, they need to keep a coach around for this transitional period they are currently in.
