PREVIEW

The game of the week in the first week of the Round 5 Split Round sees a winless Hobart side playing a Devonport side that has finally found themselves a win. Hobart twice in the last two weeks have gotten themselves into winning positions only to throw it all away, first against North Hobart. The Tigers lead by 34 points at half time only to then lose by seven points, last week they lead by 21-points at three-quarter time only to goto to Lauderdale by seven.

Devonport did what many thought was impossible, the young Magpies got over the line by 48-points against South Launceston last weekend. The Magpies put on a performance that was sure to lift the spirits around the club, and to give the side a lot of confidence going forward. This time last season Hobart had good first halves but, they blew it in the second half one such time was against Devonport at the TCA Ground.

That day it saw the emergence of a young man by the name of Clinton Viney who took the game away from the Tigers by kicking 3 in the third and finishing with 5 goals for the game. Sadly for Devonport he no longer is at the club, nor is the other stars from last season’s win. Hobart's coach Graham Fox has had a hard time with his players breaking team rules, during the week he had them doing pre-dawn ocean swims, and has dropped players too.

Devonport coach Glen Lutwyche has a young side and a new board at the Magpies, while the win against the Dogs has done some good and lifted moral around the club, they travel to Hobart and met a Tigers side in the same position as them last week. Winless, and have their own battles off field. It is hard to determine who is going to win this game, both sides have their troubles and both sides are struggling. One thing that will be clear from this game both will fight mighty hard to bring home the four points.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Matthew Cleary (Hobart) -
Turning into the Tigers dominant, most consistent player. He can play in the ruck, key defence or even pitch-hit forward. He missed the loss to Clarence but has been in the Tigers best three players in the other three matches.

Philip Crowden (Devonport) – Lead the way for the Magpies last weekend booting 5 goals for them, that’s something the Magpies have lacked this season players able to kick a few, the Magpies will hope he can replicate this against Hobart.

QUESTION MARKS

Hobart coach Graham Fox has had his team doing pre-dawn ocean swims and dropped senior players for breaking team rules, but is still yet to get a win, what will he do if the Tigers go down to Devonport?

Devonport like the Gold Coast Suns in the AFL weren't tipped to win, but they managed to both breakthrough for a win. However the Suns were quickly brought back to reality against Essendon, can Devonport avoid this fate and keep the run going?

WILL WIN AND WHY

The Magpies were super impressive against a young South Launceston side last weekend, but even though their opponents Hobart are winless they have been competitive in all their matches aside from their clash with the Roos at Bellerive. Their fadeouts this season when they have been in front have cost them, and the fadeout against Glenorchy when they were so close resulted in the Southern Magpies running away with the game.

Hobarts stars so far this season have been Cleary, Cassidy, Aaron Hall, Todd Willing, and an improving Ryan Sullivan with their experience, and the height advantage, Hobart should get the edge over the Magpies this weekend and record their first win for 2011. The mass exodus of the experience that Devonport had last season, clearly is starting to show each week, it was only that they were against a younger more inexperienced side last week that they go away with a win.

But you cannot fully discount the Magpies this week, everyone had did this last weekend and the Magpies came away with a massive win. The Tigers should be able to hold on at the TCA Ground for this win.

PREDICTION

Hobart by 30-points
