SUMMARY
We're getting close to the finals, cross town rivals North Launceston and South Launceston battle it out under lights at Aurora Stadium. North Launceston need a win to keep themselves not only in the finals, but to keep themselves in contention for a home final, Glenorchy are snapping on the heels of the Bombers only percentage is keeping the Bombers and Demons ahead of Glenorchy.
For South Launceston there is not much to play for this week just some pride they would want to end the season on a high after they started with an unexpected win, and then really haven't done anything for weeks now. The split round saw the Bombers back on the winners list against a North Hobart side who looked like taking the points last week and jumping up into third, after half time the Demons only managed the two goals, letting slip all its good first half work.
Whatever coach Paul Atkin said at half time to the Bombers it seemed to get the job done for the Bombers. They turned game completely on it's head, their charge back into the game led by Justin Cotton kicking two goals from centre half-forward and setting up many more, while Darren Crawford chipped in with three majors.
South Launceston surprisingly started the better against Devonport, they were leading by two points at the first break, and then the Magpies dominated the game, it was a black and white romp, the Pies wanted to atone for their mid-season drop off last season. South Launceston did not kick a goal during the second and third term, Devonport went on a rampage and booted 10 on way to an eventual 76-point victory. Rhy Colbeck managed to beat the Bulldogs goalkicking total by kicking 5 goals for Devonport, Brad Symmons booted 3 and Rhys Mott, the young Mariner which big chances of being drafted was again one of the Magpies' best. The only shining light for the Dogs against Devonport was the three goals to Aaron Viney.
The last time these two sides met though, it was a Friday Night clash which saw a wasteful North Launceston with a scrappy 27-point win over cross-town rival South Launceston. The Bulldogs fought back to be only 10-points down at three quarter time, but the Bombers managed a three goal to one final quarter to win the game, the Bombers had 32 shots on goal, but they only managed the nine goals, and only won by 27 points.
The Dogs from that game could hold their heads up high, but that drop off in the last quarter saw another game slip past them. This could almost give the Dogs some confidence despite their huge loses of late, to come out and upset the Bombers, and effectively have a say on how the ladder starts to shape ahead of the finals.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Justin Cotton (North Launceston) – He's been one of the best for the Bombers this season, a guy the Bombers can count on to kick some goals for them if they have Darren Crawford on an off day, he and Crawford are going to be the keys to the Bombers kicking a winning score against better sides come finals time, the Dogs won't be able to handle him.
Aaron Viney (South Launceston) – One of the few shining lights for the Bulldogs last week against a determined and dangerous Devonport side, kicked most of the Dogs score with 3 goals, that puts him as a must watch this week.
QUESTION MARKS
There has been good and bad North Launceston this season, there has also been the North Launceston that has wasted chances on goal, last time they met they were almost made pay for it, are the Bombers going to come into this game nervous?
The Dogs are known to upset teams, they are known to fight, but they are also known to roll over and die, pardon the pun, are we going to see anymore improvement in them towards the end of the season, or are we going to see another thumping?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
It's hard to see where South Launceston are going to win this, without the Bombers handing them the game on a silver platter, like they were almost given last time, coming from 10 goals down to only lose by 27 points with a team having 32 shots on goal and kicking nine goals is almost a Christmas coming early story.
The Bombers when they are on, are a good side a team that for 3 quarters, like Devonport ran the Roos ragged, and almost won the game, a Bombers side turned off can be smashed and made look foolish, the Bombers are also coming up against a guy that played in their last TFL Premiership and TFL side in Dale Chugg who is coaching the Doggies, Andrew McLean is the only surviving member of those sides.
North Launceston if switched on Friday Night are going to show the Bulldogs no mercy, they aren't going to go easy and they should win this game with ease, but it probably won't be one of those 100 points thrashings, it will be a thrashing though.
