SUMMARY
Last time these two sides met at KGV Oval last season it was a 2 point thrilling win to the Dockers, with an inaccurate Burnie who were wasting their chances managed to sneak home. They would meet again in the finals and Glenorchy would avenge their loss by smashing Burnie and setting up a Grand Final Showdown with the winner of the Preliminary Final. Fast forward to this season and both asides have had massive loses during off season, Glenorchy losing Piuselli, French, Harwood, Moles and Curley. Burnie had a mass exodus and the turmoil at the Dockers was threatening to see the Dockers go into recess.
But both sides have bounced back as best they could have hoped for both sides are knocking on the door for the finals Glenorchy sitting a game clear in the 6, Burnie sitting just outside the 6 and with this game, they could narrow the gap, and have a good chance of playing final despite the bottom of the table finish most pundits have tipped them to finish. Glenorchy has won four of their last five games, and their loss was a massive loss to an undermanned Clarence who are challenging and will possibly take the premiership this season.
Burnie have won three of their last five, and last week were shown another tough loss against a team tipped widely by many as the only challengers to Clarence this season in Launceston. Last time these two teams met at Burnie it was the Magpies who came from behind in the last quarter win the game, a game where they had trailed by 26 points early in the last quarter.
The Magpies ran out the game winners, and showed that despite fielding their youngest side in 20 years they still had enough spirit there to fight a game out, even though they have had a win-loss win-loss season early, they have managed to bounce back, the Dockers start to the season was a dream come true for new coach Brent Plant winning their first two games, but the Dockers then went on a losing steak which included the blown lead game against Glenorchy.
Last time out Jaye Bowden booted 5 goals for the Magpies with Michael Darcy getting three goals, Elijah Taylor and Luke Shackleton were able to kick 3 goals a piece for the Dockers, Jaye Bowden again has had a terrific season, young Nathan Matthews has become a very consistent player as well. While Darcy and Bowring have been able to help out a lot as well.
The Dockers are performing above peoples expectations are going to hope to keep the Top 6 in their sights with a hard fought victory of Glenorchy, the Magpies are going to hope to keep them and the Tigers out of the top six and progress on up the ladder.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Jaye Bowden (Glenorchy) – Firming as a favourite for the Glenorchy Best and Fairest having another great season for the Magpies, 5 goals the last time they met, he's going to be one the Dockers are going to need to shut down, as well as the tough forward line the Pies have, on their day the Magpies forwards can kick a decent score.
Brentyn Milverton (Burnie) – Booted 4 goals against the Blues in the Dockers loss to Launceston last week, the former Devonport player has been one of very few plus sides for the Dockers this season, he'll be a key for the Dockers tomorrow at KGV Oval.
QUESTION MARKS
We're on the final stretch heading towards the finals, Glenorchy and Burnie are both fighting for a place in the finals alongside Hobart who seems to be the only one to challenge them, Glenorchy had it easy against the Dogs last week, are the Pies on their way to securing a finals spot?
Burnie last time they played this side this season managed to blow a 26 point lead to lose to the Pies, they have had trouble against the Pies since they played them back at KGV Oval last season, will the young Dockers use last year's win against the pies by 2 points as a weapon to beat them this season? Or will the loss to Glenorchy after a 26 point loss and the last to Launceston still be in the back of their minds?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Glenorchy are looking apart from the hiccup against the premiership favourites Clarence 2 weeks ago look like they are starting to hit form at the right time of the season, the young Pies have been fighting out many games, though again with the Clarence game it wasn't their best effort this season, the Roos, Devonport and Launceston have had their measure this season. Burnie almost made amends for the finals loss to Glenorchy last year by extending a lead against Glenorchy early in the final quarter.
But a fast finishing Glenorchy managed to battle their way back into the game and took it away from the Dockers, a gutsy win for the young Magpies, the youngest team they have fielded in a long time. Now the Magpies are looking to cement themselves into the finals, and if they win for this week only they will be in 5th position and would hope to build on this and finish with a chance to play at home the first week of the finals and maybe get past the first week.
But before we head into the finals we have to finish off with this game, and then a few others, Glenorchy at home are always strong, despite loses to Clarence and North Launceston as well as the loss to Launceston all at home. The Dockers who are also having a better season then first expected can be happy that they have remained competitive this season, but they are going to find the goings tough against Glenorchy.
Glenorchy have Chris Glenn back into the side for the first time since he retired early this year, Bryce O'Garey is back from injury, the Pies will also regain Lyndon Carlton into the seniors soon as he has been playing in the reserves getting himself right after a knee injury last season, Jaye Bowden who has been mentioned before has having a very good season, will be tough to keep out, he is often not the biggest ball getter in the team, but every possession he has, is very useful for the Magpies. Nathan Matthews is having a very good consistent season, Bowring too has been good as well this season, Jade Hodge in defence has been a revelation for Glenorchy.
Jade has the ability to play forward, back, and in the midfield, Glenorchy has David Hunt, and Michael Darcy as well, but not only that their young Mariners in Arnold and Dilger too. Burnie have a few classy players as well, but they are in a major rebuilding season and I do not see them winning this game, the Pies are looking like they have started to hit some fitness after looking flat early, and will runaway with a 20 point win.
