SUMMARY
Last week the TSL almost saw the upset of the season with Devonport almost coming close to beating Clarence, but the Magpies started to fall away in the last quarter and the Roos ran over the top of the Magpies to remain unbeaten. The Bulldogs came up against the team the Roos beat the week before by 50 points, and Glenorchy came out and gave the Dogs a 51 point thrashing to get back the percentage they lost the week earlier.
Last year South Launceston became known as the upset kings, they beat Devonport, they beat North Hobart, they beat Launceston, all in close games, all three games they were not meant to be able to win, now they are under a new coach a legend of the North Launceston Football Club, Dale Chugg, and they are younger then they were last season and have been beaten by a total margin of 251 points over the last three weeks.
Devonport haven't had the best month, they have been struggling, and have only 1 win to show for the last month. The Dogs have not won since they beat the Burnie Dockers, and they haven't really looked like winning a game ever since. But they have a lot of heart, and a lot of good young talent, talent that put their body on the line as seen by the game against North Hobart, they have lost players to injury and have lost players to suspension as well.
But let's talk about the effort by the Magpies last weekend at Bellerive Oval, 3 quarters of football that showed that Clarence were not unbeatable, Devonport were making the Roos make errors and we saw Vincent Ponsonby twice cop a hit to the head and end up concussed the McDonald brothers were looking good, and the Magpies also welcome back Sam Wish-Wilson and Ben Reynolds who they had to go into last weeks game without, the Magpies' defence were stretched by Trent Standen who booted 7 goals, South Launceston had to deal with both Michael Darcy and David hunt from Glenorchy both booting 4 goals, this week the Dogs will have to contend with Reynolds at Centre Half Forward, and the McDonald brothers, as well as Bennetts, and Viney.
Though the Dogs have proven in the past they can upset teams, the Magpies have also proven their run home has been their downfall, last season they looked like finishing top 2, they limped into the finals and managed to knock out Launceston pretty easily, but the Dogs could shake up the ladder if they win this week, it will leave teams, should Glenorchy win on 32 points, and only percentage being the separator.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Vincent Ponsonby (Devonport) – A tough player for the Magpies, had a good game, but not only that showed his courage as well, became a bit of an important part of the game for the Magpies last week but he was ruled out of the game late and they could have used him. He's going to be one of a few the Dogs are going to need to hold to win.
Mitch Hills (South Launceston) – Veteran ruckman he's a vital part of the Dogs side, one of the leaders of the club as well, he's going to have to help get the younger players up for this game, as they are in for a tough day otherwise.
QUESTION MARKS
Last season we saw the Magpies start off well, but hit the wall after the break this season they started off badly and now they had a good patch but the last month has been a terrible time for them, would the first 3 quarters work to their favour, or would surrendering late work in the favour of South Launceston?
They are known as the upset Kings, or at least they should after pulling off 3 big upsets last season, even pulling off two minor upsets this season beating Lauderdale and Burnie, they have beaten Devonport in that mid season slump the Pies had, but has their last few weeks of pumping's caused them to pull up stakes and give up for the year?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Devonport haven't been convincing against South Launceston this season, but they have managed to do enough to win against them in the past. The one loss in their last few encounters came when the Magpies found themselves in a form slump which saw Glenorchy also win against them in the first battle of the Magpies, you cannot go past the Magpies in this game, Devonport gave the reigning premiers and premiership favourites Clarence a run for their money and if they had have played out the game and not gone into their shell could have won the game and pulled off their biggest TSL win since the inception of the new TSL competition.
While the Bulldogs can lay claim to being the team that can upset the big name teams, and if they win this they can help shape the TSL finals for 2010 it would cause a log jam and would also keep North Launceston in the race for 4th and also keep the other Magpies in the race for a higher position as well should they win. Devonport need to win, they would want to find a way to get up there and snatch a double chance in the finals, it will mean they travel to Bellerive after a week off to play Clarence but it's still better then struggling to stay in the finals.
However Clarence won the Grand Final without the double chance, so they are not out of that race, but they need to start hitting some form and winning some games, because the Dockers are still not done with, and Glenorchy are a chance to overtake them, so are North Launceston.
In typing all of this, the Magpies are going to win, and win easy, there is a strong chance if the Magpies are on song, they could blow the Dogs away early and just cruise home.
