ROUND 14 - REVIEW

July 12th 2010 12:12

IT was probably the best quarter by an individual in the short history of the TSL. With Clarence’s unbeaten run in great jeopardy, trailing Devonport by 15-points at three quarter time, small forward Trent Standen almost single-handedly kept the Roos quest for the perfect season alive. In a startling display, Standen booted five goals for the term as Clarence rammed on 8.5 to a solitary goal as the potential loss was turned into what appeared a comfortable 32-point win but was anything but in reality. Standen finished with seven goals for the game and had close to 30 touches in a match-winning, best-afield performance. But for so long it looked like Devonport would not only inflict Clarence’s first loss for the season, but the first at Bellerive since the reintroduction of the TSL.

The Northern Magpies dominated the stoppages for three quarters, with ruckman Ryan Williams feeding the likes of Rhys Mott and Kurt Heazlewood. While they were missing key forward Ben Reynolds, plenty of others chipped in with 10 different goal kickers supplying their 12 goals. But they also had plenty of misses when they controlled general play, and their inability to shut Clarence right out of the game allowed the last quarter resurgence. And what a resurgence it was. Stung by being behind at the last change for the first time this season, Clarence turned the momentum 180 degrees at the clearances and smashed Devonport.

Captain Nick Paine was Standen’s sidekick, with four crucial goals, while Jaymes Baker was excellent through the middle and Stuart Whitelaw just as good off the halfback line. Both teams suffered crucial injuries, with Roos big man Brennan Savage injuring his shoulder in the second term and Magpies wingman Vin Ponsonby – who had been on fire with two first half goals – badly injuring his ankle in the third quarter. Neither finished the game.

Clarence’s win sets up a tantalising contest in the second half of the split round with second-placed Launceston, which extended its winning-streak to eight with a 12-point win over Burnie at West Park. But Launceston did have to survive a fright to register its eighth straight win. Leading by 46 points at the last change, the young Dockers rallied yet again, booting six goals to one to give the Blues more than a few heart flutters. Burnie’s Brentyn Milverton kicked a game high four goals, while Daniel Ellis, Brian and Adrian Finch all kicked three for the Blues. Launceston captain Scott Stephens continued his outstanding form in the midfield, with another best on ground performance, and must now be clear favourite to win the Tassie Medal as the TSL’s best and fairest player.

Lauderdale continued its impressive recent form, with its second straight win, this time over North Launceston at Lauderdale. Lauderdale controlled the game for most of the day but had to withstand a third quarter challenge from the Northern Bombers before reclaiming control on way to a 12-point win. Despite seven goals from Darren Crawford, it was North Launceston’s third straight loss and could put its finals aspirations in jeopardy.

Jamie DiIenno booted five goals for the Southern Bombers, while Adam Joyce had more than 40 touches and kicked two goals and Jake Gillbee was a star across half-forward with numerous marks and two majors.

Hobart recorded its sixth loss in a row and can now kiss its finals hopes goodbye after being belted by 52-points by North Hobart at North Hobart. Mark Fenton, Caden Wilson and Paul Allison all kicked three for the winners with the home team never really troubled from the opening bounce.

South Launceston looks set to pick up its second wooden spoon in as many years in the TSL with another heavy loss, this time by Glenorchy at Youngtown Oval. With key forwards Michael Darcy and David Hunt booting four goals each, Glenorchy cruised to 51-point win with Jaye Bowden a class above anyone on the Bulldogs list. It was a crucial victory for the Southern Magpies as it puts them a game and percentage clear in sixth spot from chasing Burnie, and only a game behind third-placed North Hobart.
