SUMMARY
Last week arch rivals faced off in the game of the day at Bellerive Oval, Clarence brought out their heritage strip against Glenorchy as they played for the Linton-Bingley Cup, once every year they play for this cup, and that one time a year the Roos return back to their heritage strip. Devonport had their own issues last week, Andrew Taylor who returned to the club this season had walked out on them during the week as they were at home to Hobart, looking to get back onto the winners list.
Clarence and Glenorchy's game was a horrible start, but the Roos were in the lead, and they would not relinquish the lead at all during the day, they ran out winners pretty easily in the end, Glenorchy had nothing there to stop the Roos. Hobart lead Devonport by 1 point heading into the break, Hobart lead by this much against Clarence and were flogged after a 12 goal quarter by the Roos, and Devonport ran over the top of the Tigers early in the season, while the Magpies did in fact win the game it was not a massive win like they did earlier in the season.
Trent Allen was on fire up forward for the Magpies booting 3, as did Rhys Colbeck who was picked on the bench, Rhys Mott followed up his good performances for Tasmania with a best for the Magpies in this game, for the Roos, Charlie Riewoldt made his debut in the seniors, and was able to boot some goals, like his brother Jack, he was looking at home there for the Roos, so much so the Roos are giving him a spot in their forwardline this week at Full Forward.
Bradley Coad booted 4 goals, and won himself best on Ground for the day, an effort that helps keep him in the selectors sights to play in a possible premiership this season. Nick Paine who has had injury problems booted 3, and Gregg Sharnan was again tough in defence, he was one of the reasons the Magpies in the first game they played this season had to find a new way into their forwardline. These two teams played off in a final last season, that controversial final saw Devonport coach Errol Bourne criticise the league saying the game shouldn't have been move to Bellerive after North Hobart was declared unfit for football. They haven't met that often since the past TSL season, Clarence has won all their recent clashes even scored their biggest TFL win over the then Devonport Power in 1999 that game was played in front of a poor crowd of 502 people at Bellerive OVal and Clarence won 28.16.244 to Devonport 4.4.28. Towards the end of the TFL the Devonport Football Club had a lot of poor performances and this was possibly the clubs worst ever performance.
11 years on and the Magpies are looking to keep themselves in the hunt for a double chance and to do that they are going to have to beat the team that is on fire, Clarence have not lost a game, and even though for two weeks they looked shaky they returned to the Clarence of old and blew their arch rivals Glenorchy away. Ben Setchell made a successful return to football last week as well, this week's game looms as a big test for the Magpies, can they keep their top 2 hopes alive? Or are the Roos going to close the door ont hat?
PLAYER TO WATCH
Ben Setchell (Clarence) – His second game of the season, his first he was pretty close to getting best on the ground for the Roos, it went to Bradley Coad who booted 4, though for Coad he has been named as an emergency so it's unclear if he will close, but back onto Setchell, he has been a great servant of the Roos, and or the Devils after crossing over from Werribee's VFL side, and he will be another man to watch this week.
Rhys Mott (Devonport) – Had a successful Under 18 Carnival with Tasmania in Division 2, returned to Tasmania after helping Tasmania win the title again and had a very good game against the Tigers, a future draftee, and a talented young player, he and Charlie Riewoldt would be on the eyes of the national recruiters.
QUESTION MARKS
The Roos, and Glenorchy had a bad start to last weeks game, both sides making errors and just didn't make for good viewing, the Roos walked away as the victors, but can they keep this up and take out the title again? Are the Magpies from Devonport even remotely a chance?
Devonport have suffered some heavy defeats against Clarence, and have only played three times at Bellerive since the new TSL started, this is their fourth can the Magpies find enough to beat the Roos? Or do the Roos have too much quality for the Magpies?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Clarence are the benchmark this season, they have recurited well, and have played beyond everyone's expectations even their own, they have had moments where they looked like they were going to be beaten but they walked out of these games with the win. Their biggest tests were against North Launceston a team most expected to stay in the finals race they are not faltering, Hobart a team that wants to play finals but are starting to fall away, and Lauderdale a team that upset the Magpies, but were then taught a lesson by them in their rematch.
Devonport looked like they were the second best team in the league last season, but after the break they fell badly and struggled to make the finals, Clarence met them in the First Semi Final a game moved from North Hobart to Bellerive and made a double header, this saw Clarence get an advantage and win the game, but most believe Clarence had the game before the move, and the move just put the game beyond doubt for some.
Clarence showed that they have players there to back up any injury they may have and showed they are still going to play at half their best and win, this sends out warning signs to every team in the league and Clarence have not lost at Bellerive since the inception of the Tasmanian State League, another reason why Clarence are going to beat Devonport in this game and preserve their winning streak here in the 2010 season, and at Bellerive Oval, which has been stretched over 2 seasons now.
