PREVIEW
The state is buzzing with TSL fever, and Round One is finally here after a big season opener last weekend, the Tasmanian State League's opening round kicks off with a cross-town rivalry under lights at Aurora Stadium. A young South Launceston team managed to win a game last season, managed to upset some teams over the journey but have still yet to really come into their own in the TSL.
Their cross town rivals played finals last season, after they looked like the team that was going to take out the minor premiership early, but then their bubble burst and they limped over the line, and were knocked out of the finals by North Hobart. The coach departed, and former Saints defender Jeff Dunne has come aboard as the coach. He makes his debut under lights in a cross-town rivalry which his Bombers have had the wood over the lonely Dogs.
South Launceston managed to bring home a big name Mitch Thorp comes to the club after spending last season in the VFL for Box Hill and he brings bothers Cody and Beau to the club. The Bombers lost Zane Murphy one of their better players last season, the man who won the Tassie Medal but had it taken off him from a suspension he joins North Hobart. They've lost the Thorps to cross-town rivals the Dogs, plus Justin Cotton to Penguin, and also lost Geoff Crosswell to Hobart. They've brought back Taylor Whitford from SANFL club South Adelaide, and signed Paul O'Shea from Queensland, O'Shea was a rookie listed player for the Western Bulldogs.
Geoff Mohr joins from Launceston and Thane Bardenhagen comes in from Lilydale, for the Bulldogs, they also sign Rory Mansell from Rocherlea, Dane Colbeck, and Tom Lardy from Old Scotch. South Launceston has also brought to Tasmania two members of the South African National Team who played in the Multicultural Cup Tshoboko Moagi & Khayalethu Sikit.
They've lost Marjek Miar to Launceston, Nick Buller to Geelong-St. Peter's and Stephen Mayne to Rocherlea, the club is buzzing around the Mitch Thorp coming to the club. Thorp has said that the Dogs are going to have themselves a bit of a bark this season. The Bombers on the other hand would like to return to their old dominant ways in the Tasmanian State League.
In the 1990's North Launceston had themselves a rivalry with reigning premiers Clarence, and enjoyed finals, and a couple of premierships as well. South Launceston however haven't ever tasted any success in the Tasmanian State League, their last premierships came in the 1990s in the NTFL, they managed to capture back to back flags in 1998-9.
To add to the rivalry, the coach of the Bulldogs is a former North Launceston premiership player Dale Chugg, a club legend that has looked to try and bring some success to Youngtown. The Dogs have been getting closer and closer to their cross-town rival, losing their last contest by just the 20 points.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Shane Wager (North Launceston) – The Captain of the Bombers has been one of the Bombers' best over the past few seasons, the former Devil has shown great skill in the Bombers midfield, and is going to be a player the Dogs are going to need to look at stopping.
Mitch Thorp (South Launceston) – High profile former AFL Star returning to the state this season, Mitch has been saying that the Dogs are a chance and that the other teams shouldn't look to underestimate them this season. With his time over in Victoria he will be the much needed experience that the Bulldogs have lacked over the last couple of seasons.
QUESTION MARKS
North Launceston looked like an unlikely challenger early last season, and were possibly the only team that could challenge the Roos. Then the form slump and they limped into the finals, by then they were eliminated from the finals and now have a new coach. The question mark is on new coach Jeff Dunne, who marks his debut in the coaching box against South Launceston, can the new coach bring some success to the new Bombers?
Mitch Thorp comes to the TSL after a fairly decent season in the VFL, left the state with some high hopes, but never filled his full potential, now he's added an experienced head into a line up that was one of the youngest teams in the comp. Will this be enough for the Dogs to finally spend some time out of the bottom?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
A fairytale ending would be just the thing Mitch Thorp, Dale Chugg, and the rest of the South Launceston Football Club players and supporters would love to see in the Opening Round. After nothing but despair from the South Launceston boys, they've got some hope about them. But then you look across at their rivals, North Launceston, a team that has their own heartbreak over the last few years and have managed to fail when it was needed.
A brand new coach, a brand new season and the same old rivalry on a Friday Night under the lights of Aurora Stadium, the Bulldogs have been getting closer to their rivals. They have surprised some teams in the past and have shown they are not going to pardon the pun roll over. But the problem with this rivalry is, the North Launceston boys are looking the better side, sure you have added Mitch Thorp, and the other two Thorps, but the same old problems are still there for the Dogs.
But if it will live up to their last meeting, where the Bombers only got home with a 20 point win, it should be a good game to start the new TSL season officially. The Bombers cannot take this Bulldog team lightly, clubs have been handed loses in the past when they have taken this team lightly. This season it's time for Darren Crawford to start to kick more accurately, sometimes likened to Collingwood's Travis Cloke, Crawford is a good mark, even able to crumb the ball, but his accuracy has been a let down.
Leigh Harding will be slow to get into this game, he's missed 12 months with an ankle injury, Ty Stewart has suffered a serious injury in the past as well. So it's going to be a game that could go either way, but I am going North Launceston.
PREDICTION
North Launceston by 20 points.
