SUMMARY
Tonight one of these sides will be headed into a big Grand Final against the side that has not lost at Bellerive Oval since before the TSL started. Both sides played in a wet soaked afternoon, Launceston were decimated at Bellerive in the rain against the Roos, yet again, and Devonport managed to hold off a determined North Hobart side who came close to knocking out the Magpies in the wet of Devonport Oval last week.
Time to look back on how we arrived to our preliminary final, last weekend as mentioned the rain arrived, but with that unexpected down pour the news surrounded the possible return of Brett Geappen the man that injured his neck against the Northern Bombers was looking to come out of retirement, but could not gain the clearance to play, some would say his ploy was to put off the Blues, which history said that was not needed.
Launceston started brightly, with Scott Stephens kicking two goals to give the Blues the initial ascendency but soon he was shut down by the TSL’s No.1 tagger Clint Riley and the Roos quickly took control. Unlike the Blues, the Roos two tall forwards, Matthew Drury and Brennan Savage provided reliable avenues to goal and targets to channel forward thrusts through. Josh Green was superb on a wing, underlining why so many are tipping the speedy red-head to be a certain pick for this year’s AFL national draft, Cameron Thurley was pure skill and Rohan Swan dominant at centre half-back. And the few times the ball did get past Swan, Gregg Sharman monstered Hudson Medallist Brian Finch, keeping the TSL’s leading goal-kicker scoreless. Clarence won all four quarters, steadily pulling away from the Blues, who must now defeat Devonport at Aurora Stadium on Friday night.
Devonport qualified for the preliminary final with a heart-stopping two-point win over North Hobart at Devonport Oval. The ground was virtually played underwater due to the deluge on the North-West Coast, creating a tough, close fought contest.
The Magpies kicked four of their five goals for the game in the first quarter, before withstanding a last quarter Demons surge, even more remarkable given the visitors were down two players having lost Caden Wilson (concussion) and Mitchell Smith (shoulder) to injury during the match. Their 14-point lead was cut to two thanks to a huge 45m snap from Ken Hall with a heavy ball and Michael Fisher marking at the top of the goal square. But despite repeated forays forward, the Demons were unable to kick that match winning goal and keep their season alive. Matthew Smith was the Magpies best, closely followed by Rhys Mott and Brad Symmons, while Hall was brilliant around the stoppages for North Hobart and finished with two goals.
And now the Magpies are going to face the side that they lost to a couple of weeks again, for a chance to play in their first State League Grand Final since 1988 where they beat Glenorchy for the flag as yet Launceston have not played in a State League Grand Final, they were reigning NTFL Premiers in 2008 and were widely tipped to capture the first TSL Premiership.
The Blues were unable to live up to the hype and were quickly left for dead, Devonport were a surprise packet early in the season, and then the mid season collapse saw the Magpies almost miss the finals, but their run home saw them straighten the ship as did Launceston but Devonport would eliminate the Blues.
This final is going to be a great one, the Roos will sit back and watch the game tomorrow afternoon live on the ABC, while the loser will be licking their wounds looking ahead to 2011. Launceston are the only side to have beaten the Roos this season, but have yet to find any form in the finals against them, both times Clarence have had the game all their own way, albeit for a minor charge in the third quarter of the Qualifying Final.
Devonport managed to challenge the Roos, and if it was not for the final quarter fade out that saw the Roos run away with the game, the Magpies could have been the first to have captured a win against the Roos. But the team that wins here has a great chance of beating the Roos, not because this games result means you are going to win the flag, no, it means you have a chance.
The Roos will no doubt start favourites for that clash, but will know they can lose it, look back to last season, Glenorchy had a bit of favouritism heading into the last Grand Final, and were caught napping and had to fight back, in the end the Roos won by a goal.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Brian Finch (Launceston) – The Hudson Medallist has been labelled the man to stop by the Magpies, he's in fine form, even though against the Roos he has been far from impressive, he'll likely cause the Magpies from problems if they do not find a way to shut him down like the Roos have been doing.
Rhys Mott (Devonport) – He has not had many bad games, and has been pretty consistent for the Magpies, he will be one player the Magpies hopes will be resting on there in the middle, this could very well be his last game at the Magpies if they lose this game.
QUESTION MARKS
Both sides played in wet conditions last week, and both are going to be travelling, but has Launceston's confidence been blown apart again by a massive loss to Clarence? Are the Blues any chance of beating the Roos next week, should they survive the Magpies?
A wet game last week, a close game as well, it was a hard fought game can the Magpies back up that game and win again this week? And if they do, can the premiership become a cakewalk for the Good old Devonport?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Launceston should go in favourites after their win against Devonport last time around, but the Magpies do have a little more momentum coming into this game after their small win. Launceston should be able to win this game, as I do not believe the Magpies have anyone that will be able to not only stop Brian Finch, but also stop Stephens, O'Keefe, and not only this, but the Magpies were a team coming into the finals series with a few injuries and sore bodies, that wouldn't have been a good thing about last week in the heavy wet conditions.
The Magpies are going to need to learn how to kick straight when it matters, as they were very inaccurate the last time they played the Blues when the game mattered. Launceston will play the Roos next week in the TSL Grand Final.
