GLENORCHY stormed into next week's TSL finals series with a courageous win over North Hobart in a contest befitting a final at KGV yesterday, but the win might have come at a high price.
Magpie forward David Hunt limped off with a strained groin and defender Daniel Muir was reported for striking North Hobart spearhead Jesse Wells, and will face the tribunal tomorrow night.
The Magpies started the day placed sixth on the ladder, but the gritty 12-point win 12.20 (92) to 12.8 (80) raised them to fourth and won them the double chance North Hobart had been hoping to keep.
It was Glenorchy's third win over North Hobart this season and means they have earned a trip to Devonport to play the Northern Magpies in the second qualifying final next weekend, after Devonport knocked off North Launceston yesterday, winning 8.22 (70) to 8.12 (60).
"The prize on offer was a double chance and that involves a trip to Devonport," said Glenorchy coach Ben Reid.
"We look forward to the challenge against them
"We went up there and won last year. We know we can do it up there.
"The feeling around the rooms after the game says that we will go in with a great deal of confidence and give it our best."
North Hobart's loss meant it lost fourth spot to Glenorchy and will now host a cut-throat elimination final against North Launceston next weekend at a ground to be revealed by AFL Tasmania today.
Glenorchy was comfortably the better side of the two in the first half yesterday, but North Hobart woke up in the second and it was game on.
There were fewer than 10 points between them for almost the entire second half.
The lead changed six times and the match could have gone either way, and the thriller brought the 1000-strong crowd to life.
North Hobart grabbed the lead at the 23 minute mark when Caden Wilson snapped a ripping ground-grubber goal from a pack.
Glenorchy hit back with an even better goal by Jake Cox a banana from the boundary line on the wrong side for a left footer.
Chris Glenn then swooped on a golden opportunity within range and his goal sealed the deal for the Pies.
"It's a great feeling to take care of a rival and another finals aspirant," Reid said.
"With what was hanging on the game, and the way the game ebbed and flowed, that feels great and we're really thrilled with the result."
Glenorchy's engine room was revved up by the brilliance of Brayden Webb, with Jon Bowring rotating through the midfield with great effect as well as being the side's leading goalkicker with four.
