GLENORCHY is 70 per cent sure it will have a playing coach with AFL experience in charge for 2011.
The Magpies are looking for a new coach after Ben Reid resigned from the job after Sunday's second elimination final loss to North Hobart at Bellerive.
Glenorchy president Steve Allie said he had spoken to former North Melbourne champion Glenn Archer and recently retired Kangaroo forward Corey Jones, but both knocked back the offer.
"I went to Melbourne last week and I interviewed three or four prospects and we got some fairly positive feedback," Allie said yesterday.
"There is a good chance we might get a high-profile playing coach."
Asked if all those in contention had AFL experience, Allie said:
"Yep, that is what we are aiming for. It is about a 70-30 chance for our next coach to have AFL experience.
"We tried Glenn Archer and Corey Jones, but the people who are still in the hunt are very good prospects and we want to keep a lid on it until we get a positive indication from them.
"We have got two or three hot prospects and we've got another four or five we've still got to talk to. It depends on what pans out with other [AFL] clubs, we'll see who's going to get cut and we'll talk to them.
"We'd like to have one appointed by mid to late October at the latest." Glenorchy has already signed promising Devonport and Mariner ruckman-forward Ben Brown for next season, providing he is not drafted this year.
Brown underwent a knee reconstruction recently but hopes to return to action next year.
This year was the first time Glenorchy has not made the grand final since 2005.
Allie said there were reasons for the Pies' poor year.
"He [Reid] got us to a grand final [2009], but injuries this year have really decimated us and Sunday was an example of that," Allie said.
"We had 12 frontline players missing."
Allie said utility Jade Hodge had accepted an assistant-coach's role with his old club Leeton in the Riverina Football League and 2009 state onballer Bryce O'Garey may go with him.
The club has also been in talks with former skipper Shane Piuselli, who spent this year with VFL side Coburg, but was unsure if he was heading back to Tasmania at this stage.
Allie said the club would appoint its TSL coach before looking at its SFL coach for next year.
