DEVONPORT captain and reigning Tassie Medallist Kurt Heazlewood has received support from an unlikely source as he prepares for tonight's TSL tribunal appearance.
Heazlewood was reported in the first quarter of Saturday's two-point win over North Hobart for a front-on bump that saw the Demons' Caden Wilson stretchered from the ground.
The former St Kilda draftee is an essential player if the Northern Magpies are to defeat Launceston in Friday night's preliminary final at Aurora Stadium.
But North Hobart president and Mercury columnist Darryn Perry said Heazlewood should have little to fear.
"I'd be very surprised if he went for that," Perry said.
"Basically it was a courageous Caden fighting for the ball and basically ran into him. Kurt Heazlewood is certainly not the type of player who is going to go in there and try and clean someone up.
"It was a surprising report."
Perry said Wilson only suffered a touch of concussion.
Devonport president Steve Daley said the club would be defending its skipper tonight.
"We strongly believe that he doesn't have a case to answer and we will be stating that," Daley said.
After an up and down season, the Demons found some form in the finals, defeating North Launceston and Glenorchy before Saturday's narrow loss to Devonport on a water-logged Devonport Oval.
Perry said there were plenty of positives to come from the year.
"Considering the conditions it was a terrific game of football where both sides gave it everything," Perry said.
"Unfortunately there had to be a loser and it was us but it could have gone either way.
"The last month our guys have really bonded and it should hold us in good stead for next year. They were terrific."
Playing-coach Clinton Brown is contracted for next year, while the Demons will also regain star recruit Nathan Street.
Street missed the Demons' last 12 games due to a knee injury.
"I'm really happy with the steps forward we've made this year and with good depth, we are looking forward to going further next year and we should do," Perry said.
Young star Sam Darley is the only confirmed loss at this stage as he is off to join the AFL's newest team, Greater Western Sydney.
