FORMER Coastal footballer and assistant coach with Devonport last year Paul Atkins will take the reins at North Launceston this season. Atkins had beaten out Shane Wager the current captain of the Bombers, and board member Max Pearce. Atkins who onnce played for the Burnie Hawks with twin brother Simon, who coaches the Werribee Tigers in the VFL was drafted to the Sydney Swans back in 1992 he would only play 2 games with the Swans but he would forge a career for himself in Tasmanian Football.
He was once the coach of NWFA team Rosebery-Toorak, before moving on to become the assistant at the Magpies last season. Atkins was appointed the coach of the Bombers after weks of deliberation from the North Launceston board following firm favourite Max Brown's decision to withdraw his bid for the top job.
Max Brown was once the coach of the Magpies in the last Tasmanian State League when it was known as the TFL, and Devonport were named as the Blues, before their Power change in 1997. At the end of the day we were looking for someone outside the football club," North Launceston president Reg Lyons said said to The Advocate newspaper who reported this story back in November last year.
"Paul came to us with a wealth of experience and hopefully he can take us somewhere," Lyons said. The Bombers were once a powerhouse of the TFL when they were first there, the years have not been kind to them since they left the league, last season they failed to make the finals but they did come close.
Atkins will hope to bring them some success. North Launceston has already lost Taylor Whitford who will be off to South Australia. Michael Roe also leaves the club, choosing to head to the Northern Territory in the Top End Australian Football Association for club University. The Bombers have also lost Jess Crichton who was drafted to the Fremantle Dockers last November in the AFL draft.
There has been no word on who has been signed to the Bombers this season, but their season does not start until the first week of April.
