NTFL growth on hold

THE possible expansion of the Burnie Dockers to play a team in the NTFL next season has been put on the back burner following a meeting yesterday.

NTFL president Andrew Richardson and AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade met yesterday and agreed not to expand the NTFL competition in 2011.

The decision means that the Burnie Dockers will not be provided with the opportunity to field teams in both the Tasmanian State League and the NTFL.

"While the NTFL is very interested in the future expansion of our competition, we believe that we need to slow the process down a little and wait until AFL Tasmania's review report for football below the Tasmanian State League is completed, publicly presented and then considered by all members of the NTFL," Richardson said in a statement yesterday.

"Therefore, the NTFL is not yet ready to fully consider a recent request from the Burnie Dockers to field teams in both the NTFL and TSL competition."

Wade said that the review report on football below the TSL will be presented to the Tasmanian Football Council within the next few weeks.

"AFL Tasmania agrees with the NTFL that while we would be delighted to see a club from the City of Burnie playing in the region's premier local competition, we do appreciate the need to wait until the time is right," Wade said

"However, it is will be vital for the NTFL to consolidate its view on the long-term structure of the NTFL competition over the next 12 months."

Burnie Football Club president Peter Vincent said that it's a good thing that they have opted to wait a year.

"It's probably a good thing to take a year to plan towards it," Vincent said.

"For us as a club another year would be handy to get our supporters base together."

Vincent confirmed that the club would still pursue the idea of a team out of Burnie to play in the NTFL in 2012.
