Hall snub disappoints coach

NORTH Hobart playing-coach Clinton Brown has reacted in disbelief after the Demons' star player Ken Hall failed to make the top 20 for the 2010 best and fairest award, the Tassie Medal.

Hall, a former Essendon listed player and Devils onballer, played all 18 roster games, was named in the best 12 times the equal third most in the competition and kicked 25 goals mostly from the midfield.

"That is actually disappointing," Brown said when the top 20 was announced yesterday.

"Given his year I would have thought he would have had a top five finish, so not to make the top 20 is a bit hard to believe."

Brown said it may be Hall was judged by his own high standards and his own style of play that counted against him in the umpires' eyes.

"The thing with Kenny is he is not the flashy, get the ball and run with six bounces type of player," he said.

"He does a lot of hard work, bustling in the packs and he is the best tackler in the comp by a mile and I just don't think you get the recognition for that.

"That's unfortunate, because he's had a really good year and I thought he would have given it a shake especially because we had so many inconsistent players this year and he was our main consistent one."

Nine of the 10 TSL clubs are represented with players in the top 20, including last year's winner, Devonport captain Kurt Heazlewood, this year's favourite and Launceston captain Scott Stephens.

The Blues have the most in the top 20 with five, one more than premiership favourite Clarence, which lost only one game for the year.

The list will be reduced to 10 next Monday, with the count and medal to be presented just before the grand final at Bellerive on September 18.

AFL Tasmania also announced that the Launceston-Devonport preliminary final would be held on Friday, under lights, at Aurora Stadium, starting at 6pm.

TOP 20:

Darren Banham (Burnie)
Tim Bristow (Launceston)
Jake Cox (Glenorchy)
Oliver Di Venuto (North Hobart)
Marcus Fitze (Lauderdale)
Brett Geappen (Clarence)
Kurt Heazlewood (Devonport)
Jeremy Howe (Hobart)
Nathan Matthews (Glenorchy)
Kurt McCabe (Launceston)
Zane Murphy (North Launceston)
Sam O'Keefe (Launceston)

Magpies want muddy match

NORTH Hobart playing-coach Clinton Brown has spent enough time with Devonport counterpart Errol Bourn to know all about the crafty mind games he can play.

But Bourn's ramping up the pressure ahead of today's third elimination final at Devonport Oval is like water off a duck's back to the Demons leader.

Brown played in four premierships with the Magpies coach during Burnie's golden NTFL run from 2001-05 including the last under Bourn when he coached the Dockers to the last of their flags before Launceston took over.

If the weather forecast for today holds true the match is likely to turn into a rain-soaked slugfest, something Bourn believes will play into his side's hands.

"I went and watched them play Glenorchy who were very undermanned but they ran the ball really nicely and I think the weather tomorrow might play a significant role," Bourn said yesterday.

"It's meant to bucket down, so that might curb them a bit.

"We've got a few bigger bodies that might suit that guys like Matthew Smith, who is a good wet-weather player, "Snapper" [captain Kurt Heazlewood] is a resilient player, Rhys Colbeck is a proven wet-weather player it could work in our favour."

However, Brown laughed off suggestions North Hobart would be picking lighter bodies and, if it does rain, extracting the ball from regular stoppages will be crucial.

The Demons have their own enforcers, such as Ken Hall, Matthew Creese and big ruckman Matthew Muir, to dominate if the game clogs up.

"They've still got guys like Rhys Mott and Quade Byard. I'm not sure where he [Bourn] is coming from there," Brown said.

"He has played a big part in my footy career.

"I've taken a lot off Errol, both positive and negative in the way I approach things.

"He comes across as a bit of a weird character and tries to put people off but he is a very smooth and smart operator behind the scenes."

The Demons will be up early for the 1pm start to be on the bus leaving Hobart at 6.30am.

Brown admits it is a far from ideal preparation for a cut-throat final.

Demons find winning formula

THERE were no real surprises at the weekend with Launceston too conditioned for the Devonport Magpies and North Hobart smashing an undermanned Glenorchy.

The super-fit Blues' win resulted from four quarters of sustained effort led by its old heads who stepped up.

The Demons were never tested by Glenorchy and had winners everywhere, particularly in the midfield, where Ken Hall and co. dominated.

A new-found mental resolve and an ability to absorb finals heat will be needed for North Hobart to keep winning.

Coach Clinton Brown has North Hobart playing together and following team rules.

The Demons produced some stunning football and Devonport will have to be at its very best to stop them.

They have found extra midfielders to help Hall at the stoppages and then quickly spread to attack.

These include impressive Cygnet "tough nut" Tom Nicholls, the silky Sam Darley and the experienced Clint Brown and Ollie Di Venuto.

Ruckman Matty Muir is in top form and his ability to play both ruck and forward will stretch the Magpies' defence. Teenage ruckman Geoffrey Unsworth is quickly developing.

Devonport has two strike forwards in Ben Reynolds and Rhys Colbeck, and more than one goal-kicking flanker.

Kurt Heazlewood and Trent McCrossen ignite the midfield, and Claye Hardy is the competition's best run-with player.

The match-ups will be crucial and whoever stays focused will win.

I'm tipping the in-form Demons just.

The Clarence-Launceston game promises to be a ripper.

Both teams are in winning form with the Blues regaining confidence and the Roos, as always, playing top footy.

Launceston would be aware of the Roos' strengths and know it has to curb champion utility Cameron Thurley, ball magnet Ben Setchell and speedster Josh Green.

This game will be closer than most pundits expect but it should go Clarence's way.

Sunday saw the end of Glenorchy coach Ben Reid after two successful years in the job that netted a grand final appearance and another finals finish.

Reid has endured a tough year at Magpie Land with injuries to key players costing them big time.

Let's hope the ground at Bellerive is clearly marked on Saturday. Last Sunday it was anyone's guess where the boundary, centre square and goal square lines were, causing confusion for players, umpires and spectators.

He's too young to join this season, but North Hobart's Sam Darley has been talked about as a possible draftee for GWS.

The young Demon has been showing silky skills for Tasmanian State League Club North Hobart at senior level, and has been applying his craft to the Tasmanian Mariners
