IT took a while, and a few splutters, but SFL giant New Norfolk eventually got its engine running again.

After Dodges Ferry ended the Eagles' 32-game winning streak the previous round, the league leaders returned to the victors list with a 44-point win over Lindisfarne at Boyer yesterday.

But at quarter time it looked anything but a comfortable victory.

New Norfolk was kept to just a solitarily behind in the opening term as the Two Blues opened up a 20-point lead.

It should have been much more, as even with the aide of the breeze the visitors dominated play.

But Eagles coach Anthony McConnon restructured his side at quarter time, going from a zone set up to a man-on-man approach and from there the game turned.

"I remember a guy saying to me once, 'you start the way you finished the week before' and it was fairly relevant today," McConnon said.

"That is the first game I can remember where we haven't kicked a goal in a quarter either. That is something new.

"We changed our structure and the guys changed their attitude and after that it was good. But we probably didn't get out of third gear all day, to be honest."

With regular key forwards Michael Thompson and Ricky Martin both struggling, captain Brad Carver was swung into attack with devastating effect.

He booted five goals for the game, and was too big and strong for the Lindisfarne defence, taking a number of contested marks deep in the goal square.

Fellow Eagle Brett Booth was rewarded for his chase and tackles with four opportunist goals, while Leigh Horne was outstanding all day.

Lindisfarne was far from disgraced and even got to within 11 points after Tim Bracken (four goals) kicked the opening goal of the final term.

It shows how far the Two Blues have improved, as they were savaged by 108 points last time the two teams met in round two.

Wily Huonville playing-coach Michael McGregor might be a bit long in the tooth these days but he still can find the goals, as demonstrated by his seven-goal haul in the Lions 75-point win over Sorell at Pembroke Park.

The league's leading goalkicker Darren Garth chipped in with four goals to take his tally for the season to 58.

Claremont and Cygnet were virtually inseparable all day, but it was the Magpies with their nose in front by a goal at the final siren.

Kingborough had an easy 70-point win over Triabunna and the Central Hawks beat Brighton by 32 points.
