Magpies' season back on track
May 25th 2010 14:23
The Magpies have gone on a five game winning streak to put their season back on track after losing three straight early on. Devonport were facing a bleak season after a horrible start, 3 straight loses to start the season and a loss against summer's wooden spoon favourite Burnie had seen the Magpies drop out of finals contention early.
But the Magpies have managed to bounce back with some big wins, and this week they meet the Southern Magpies who are themselves finding the going tough at the moment in Glenorchy who were again given a football lesson by premiership favourites Clarence.
The Magpies have also unearthed some talented forwards as well, with former Demon and Magpies Scott Bennetts enjoying his first season at Devonport, in the last 3 weeks has has managed to kick an average of three goals a game, and booted 5 goals against North Launceston alongside Ben Reynolds who might not be the most accurate right now, but he is still finding a late goal here and there.
Clinton Viney also found a spot in the Magpies forward line popping up to kick some goals, against Hobart he booted 3 goals in the third to help swing that game into the favour of Devonport before the Magpies ran away with it.
Ben Reynolds is pushing for selection in the Tasmanian State side at Centre Half Forward, he will be no doubt battling Glenorchy's Jonathon Bowring and Clarence's Matthew Drury for the spot, but he has been selected in the squad and if he can keep on popping up with some goals, and keep accurate he is a chance to make the Tasmanian Side side to play Queensland in June on the Gold Coast.
Devonport Coach Errol Bourn has said the Magpies will get together with Glenorchy to pay tribute to Jim Manson who passed away last week, Manson was a Glenorchy legend, and the father of former Collingwood premiership player, and former Fitzroy play James Manson. The Magpies voted to do the tribute as Ben Brown, the grandson of Jim is currently playing at their club.
The game is at 2pm on Saturday at Devonport Oval, there will be a luncheon before the game hosted by the Devonport Football Club, Devonport coach Errol Bourn will be speaking at the luncheon, for more details contact the Devonport Football Club.
