A DEPLETED Glenorchy has bowed out of the State League finals race in straight sets, with coach Ben Reid also announcing he will not be returning for 2011 after the 58-point loss to North Hobart at Bellerive yesterday.
Already missing a handful of their most important cogs, the Magpies lost another four key players from the squad named on Wednesday, while others played injured and the Demons cashed-in with a 21.12 (138) to 11.14 (80) victory.
David O'Garey (hamstring), Simon Spencer (knee), Mark Corbett (hamstring) and Jake Cox (disciplinary reasons) were all notable absentees, while the likes of David Hunt and Jon Bowring played in distress.
It typified the year Glenorchy has had, with the club unable to get any continuity with players on the park and in the end it blew the double chance after last weekend's loss to Devonport.
North Hobart was ruthless from the outset, jumping its opponent to skip to a 15-point break at the first change.
Ken Hall and playing-coach Clinton Brown were everywhere early. Matthew Muir dominated the ruck and was dangerous up forward.
Every time Glenorchy threatened to attack, the Demons steadied and a 24-point lead at the long change was extended to 54 at the last with a six goal to one third term.
For the first time in the match, the Magpies put together consecutive goals with three quick majors early in the last but as they had done all day, North replied as the game opened up in junk time with a 13 goal last quarter.
The Demons had multiple avenues to goal with 11 individual goal kickers, led by Brown, Hall, Muir and Paul Allison, who all booted three each.
Jaye Bowden worked tirelessly to finish with four majors for the Pies, who for the first time since 2005 will not feature on grand final day.
"We really fell into today in terms of personnel wise, we got smashed in the last few days and guys didn't come up, we had guys out there who weren't fit but did their best," Reid said.
"We make no excuses, they were the better side and they are up and about and have a healthier list than us.
"I won't be re-applying [for the coaching job], I've got a young family, a two-year-old and a 13-week-old, it's been pretty hard juggling that.
"The role is going to expand next year with the way the club is structuring itself, so it's going to require someone to put in more time than I would be able to."
North Hobart set up a clash with Devonport next week, with Brown happy things are coming together at the right time of the year.
Geoff Unsworth, 16, gave the Dees regular use of the ball from stoppages while allowing Muir to roam forward while the backline held strong all day in keeping Hunt and Michael Darcy goalless.
"They were a little bit undermanned going into the game but you don't take those things for granted. We just stuck to our processes and it was a real good result considering they have beaten us three times during the year," Brown said.
"We showed some really good things during the year and it was just a matter of putting it together for four quarters and I think today we did."
