Magpies give reigning premier a big shake-up

WREST Point Tasmanian State League premier Clarence is still undefeated, but for three quarters of Saturday's match, Devonport looked like toppling the Roos at their Bellerive fortress.

The Magpies led by 15 points at three-quarter time but Clarence ran over the top of them with an eight-goal-to-one final term, to win by 32 points.

Although he should be happy Devonport kept pace for three quarters, Magpie coach Errol Bourn was disappointed.

"I never like losing," Bourn said.

"We had our chances and we just didn't capitalise," he said.

"We had a couple of opportunities late in the third quarter to extend our lead, but we didn't take them."

"Our backline was under incredible pressure late in the game and our midfield and forward line worked really hard."

"We took a few risks when the game was there to be won and they didn't pay off," Bourn said.

Small forward and equally capable defender Phillip Crowden minded Clarence goalkicker Trent Standen, and held him to just one goal by the last change.

Crowden was highly effective, taking some great marks and making important spoils.

However, Standen broke loose in the last quarter and kicked six goals as the Roos romped home.

Rhys Mott was one of Devonport's best for the second week in a row, along with Kurt Heazlewood and Brad McDonald.

Bourn said he was in awe of some of the things Clarence did, but equally impressed Devonport matched the Roos for three- quarters, although with a differing style of play.

Bourn said the absence of full forward Ben Reynolds and Matthew Smith and Sam Widdowson could have been the difference between Devonport losing and winning.

After beating Hobart last week and showing a lot of spirit against Clarence, Bourn believed Devonport was back on track.
