It's Howard's way for Pies

GLENORCHY'S new senior coach Byron Howard will invoke the lessons learned playing under hard-man Mark Yeates at North Hobart in the early 1990s when he takes the reigns of the Magpies next season.

A two-time Demons premiership player and twice century goal-kicker in the former Statewide League, Howard, 41, admired former Geelong star Yeates.

The Yeates no-nonsense approach will be "Big Byron's" blueprint for coaching.

"It was just his approach and the way he got the best out of me," Howard said.

"I'd had a couple of pretty ordinary years and then played well for a couple of years under him and that got my career going.

"I admired the way he approached the players ... he was very hands on, so that's what I'll be doing."

He will meet with the Glenorchy players at KGV next week when the Magpies will get their first taste of the Howard ethos.

"The players need to be prepared to work hard and if they are not prepared to work hard they won't be playing senior footy," Howard said.

Glenorchy has lost players Jade Hodge, Bryce O'Gary, Sean Browning and Cal Garvey to country NSW.

"We wish them all the best and they are welcome back anytime," Howard said.

"The club has been busy recruiting over recent weeks and hopefully we can secure a couple of big names over the next few weeks."

Glenorchy is still talking with former Brisbane and Western Bulldogs star Jason Akermanis about being a fly-in player next season.

"If we got him that would be a positive result for the club and Tassie footy," he said.

After his 146 senior game and 582-goal career with North Hobart, Howard coached Brighton to a flag in 1998 and runner-up in 1999.

He coached University in 2001, was North Hobart's reserves coach in 2005, and assistant senior coach in 2006.

From 2007-2009 he was with AFL Tasmania's Talent Pathway Program, including state under-16 coach in 2008 and 2009.

He was assistant coach to Ben Reid at Glenorchy this season.
