NORTH Hobart's premiership hopes have been dealt a severe blow with star onballer Nathan Street almost certain to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
At just 26 Street is already a veteran of more than 100 VFL games for the Devils and spent last season representing WAFL premier South Fremantle before returning to Hobart this year.
A surgeon informed Street on Friday he had damaged cartilage and torn a muscle in the knee.
He must wait six weeks for the muscle injury to heel before undergoing an arthroscope to clean up the cartilage.
"By the time that happens it is pretty close to the end of the year," Street said yesterday.
"It is pretty disappointing but I have been pretty lucky with injuries, I've never had anything serious before so I guess my turn was always coming.
"Hopefully I can get back with finals but we'll just have to wait and see how it pulls up after the operation.
"It will be touch and go."
Street has been carrying the damaged cartilage for about a month, which has limited his output, but further injured his knee during the round nine hiding to Clarence at North Hobart Oval.
"I'd barely trained, I had just been trying to get myself up for games," he said.
"I was struggling but least I know why I hadn't been able to run. I know now what it is and I just need to get it fixed. It will be the first time I've missed more than one game in a row."
Street would have been a certain selection in Saturday's state game against Queensland but was already ruled out because of a university exam.
"I've got a couple more years left in me so hopefully I can get a game somewhere down the line," he said. Meanwhile, Clarence playing-coach Brett Geappen has been released from hospital, but still has feelings of pins and needles down his arm.
Geappen injured his neck diving for a mark during Saturday's win over North Launceston that saw him spend Saturday night and most of Sunday in hospital.
A CT scan has cleared him of any structural damage, but the TSL's leading goalkicker with 62 goals in 10 games is waiting to see a neurosurgeon to find out the extent of the injury.
