Today the career of veteran Tiger Justin Harvey came to an end as the Tigers were smashed by 74 points by premiership contender Launceston at the TCA Ground today. Harvey officially holds the club record at the Hobart Football Club, it was made officially during the first quarter when he ran onto the ground.

The Tigers had a horrible season this season, they went 7 weeks without a win, and then managed to thump Glenorchy at the TCA Ground. But alas the Tigers have not been able to build on that win and their season came to an end this afternoon at the TCA Ground.

Talkfooty.com.ay wishes Justin all the best in the future, he has been a great servant of the Hobart Football Club, it's always sad to see a veteran like him bow out of the game.

Veteran set to break record

Justin Harvey is set to break the games record for Hobart this weekend.
THE uncertainty of reserves football beyond 2010 for the 10 State League clubs could see Hobart record-breaker Justin Harvey play his final match for his beloved Tigers this weekend.

Harvey will line up for his 288th match against Launceston at the TCA on Saturday, taking him past club great Kerry Wilson.

However, having played 12 of his 14 matches this year in the reserves, Harvey could be left on the sidelines at season's end, with AFL Tasmania deciding to only run seniors and colts competitions in the future.

The colts will be restricted to mainly under-18 and under-21 players, meaning veterans who miss senior selection would be left watching from the sidelines.

It is a situation which leaves Harvey, who grew up supporting the club, pondering his future despite feeling like he has a couple of more seasons left in the tank.

"It's a great honour. I've supported the club since I was a child and to break [the games record] is a great feeling," he said yesterday.

"I'd like to hopefully keep playing for another few years. It is partly dependent on what happens with the competition next year and which way the club wants to go.

"It's one of the questions at the moment with each club and how they are going to work the competition next year.

"We have a lot of great clubmen who play seconds ... and when guys weigh up at the start of the season whether it is worthwhile going to play for that club, I'm not sure how it will work."

The day will be even more special for the club, with the Tigers to play in a heritage jumper representing Cananore.

Following World War II, Cananore which was inducted in the AFL Tasmania Hall of Fame this year became Hobart.

Tigers coach Graham Fox confirmed Harvey will break the record in the seniors, with the stalwart to return to the fold following three solid showings in the reserves.

"He'll be part of the side," Fox said.

High-flying Jeremy Howe

HOBART'S Jeremy Howe was a one-man highlight reel in the Tigers demolition of Glenorchy on Saturday.

The blond full-forward took several screamers, elevating himself above packs to repeatedly gather the ball to kick six goals.

And he did it when the game was there to be won, booting four goals in the opening term and lifting his teammates who were down on confidence after seven straight losses.

Howe, 20, said it took him a little while to go for his marks in his first year in the TSL after moving up from SFL club Dodges Ferry, especially sharing the forward line with state centre half-forward Michael Cassidy.

"I wasn't so sure as you don't want to be jumping in front of Cassidy but they [the coaching staff] just said, 'It's you and him in the forward line, just have a crack at it and see how you go'," Howe said yesterday.

"That chest mark on the weekend, that was a bit of luck. I just jumped and some poor bloke got underneath me.

"But it gets a bit of a good feeling around the boys and everyone gets a lift out of it."

If taking big marks was not enough to make his standout, Howe has added the blond dye to make sure no one misses him.

"That was a bit of a change the other week and I've definitely copped it from everyone," the fourth-year electrician said.

The 93-point thrashing of Glenorchy was just the tonic for the Tigers, especially with a tough run to the finish line against the TSL's top two sides, Clarence on Sunday followed by Launceston.

"We've all known we can all play well enough to beat good sides, but it has just been putting it all together on the day has been the hard thing. On Saturday we finally did," he said.

"Everyone was on a bit of downer ... now all the boys are just stoked. We haven't been playing too bad."

A finals contender?

May 30th 2010 07:43
Hobart has had a mixed start to the season, they managed to upset the Demons last weekend putting them into the top 6 for the first time since the start of the Tasmanian State League. Yesterday Lauderdale who were soundly beaten by the Magpies at Bellerive last week came out and managed to take the points away from the Tigers at their home ground of the TCA Ground, something that most pundits wouldn't have tipped.

Before the start of the season the Tigers were hoping to play finals, they are a young side they have had key injuries in different stages of this season, they took Devonport and Clarence to their limits in the first halves at the TCA Ground this season but were wiped out in the second half. Even yesterday the Tigers held the Bombers scoreless in one of the quarters but were soundly beaten, the Tigers play Glenorchy who were soundly beaten as well yesterday, the winner next week could possibly see themselves in the six at the end of the round

A minor look at Hobart

April 2nd 2010 10:51
The Hobart Football Club was formed at a meeting at The Continental in Hobart on 19 December 1944, and became a playing member of the Tasmanian Football League in 1945. Hobart played under the emblem 'Tigers' and wore a Yellow & Black playing strip. The Tigers lost every game in its first season under coach Cecil Geappen and were similarly unsuccessful in 1946. In 1947 Hobart made the Grand Final but were beaten by North Hobart.

The club were to become a prominent finalist over the following 20 years, missing out only twice between 1947-1966, along the way collecting six TFL premierships, a State Premiership and losing four grand finals
