Footy transfer battle brews

SFL boss Angus Adams has lashed out at State League club Hobart for not clearing three New Norfolk players back to the Eagles this season.

Sam Hall, Zeb Graham and Kurt Styles went from New Norfolk to Hobart last season, but now want to return to the Eagles to play in the SFL.

Adams said yesterday Hobart wanted $4000 from New Norfolk to get its own players back, and that was not fair.

The two clubs are in negotiations about the clearance of the three.

"It's unbelievable," Adams said. "You get players to go from New Norfolk to Hobart and they [Hobart] don't pay New Norfolk anything, but the other way around they are asking thousands of dollars for them to go back.

"You can't say that's fair. It's disappointing. Players were supposed to go back and forward smoothly between SFL and State League clubs. It's not happening that way."

The trio will be allowed to play in New Norfolk's opening game against Claremont at Abbotsfield Park tomorrow.

"We've got them on a one-week permit for this week," Eagles coach Matthew Smith said yesterday. "But we're in negotiations with Hobart to get them for 12 months or six months on a permit basis.

"These three guys have signed a two-year contract with them and they've only served one

"So I can see where they are coming from."

Hobart had a mass exodus of players after last season.

"We have taken a pretty hard line with all players who signed two-year contracts and who then decided that it was all a bit too hard and left the club," said Hobart president Phil Baker.

Fox hunting begins for Hobart

HIT hard by the loss of seven senior players, Hobart's search for State League recruits has uncovered a classy onballer from the Northern Territory Football League.

Tigers coach Graeme Fox went to Darwin last week to interview three potential recruits - a key backman and two midfielders.

Two of them declined the advance, while onballer Ryan Matthews committed to the move south with one caveat.

"We've only got to find him a job and he'll come down," Fox said yesterday.

"He's a good onball type and he will fit into our side quite nicely."

Fox got wind of the three potential recruits while holidaying in Queensland.

"They play for Port Douglas in the Cairns League and they went to Darwin to play in their summer competition up there," Fox said.

"Rather than flying them all down to have a look at them, I went across from the Gold Coast to Darwin to meet with them and watch them play."

The Tigers are now looking for employment for Matthews.

Hobart lost seven senior players in the off-season, including AFL recruits Jeremy Howe (Melbourne) and George Burbury (Geelong rookie).

"We've lost quite a few senior players from last year, which is very disappointing," Fox said.

"Two got drafted and the other blokes have been wooed away by the SFL and Old Scholars, who have offered them big money.

"It's knocked us about.

"We pay pretty well at Hobart, but I can't understand how these other clubs can offer such big money."

The Tigers are still hunting for several quality midfield ball-winners and a centre half-back.

"We have got several irons in the fire, so we will keep looking and hopefully we will find the right players soon," Fox said.

The TSL season opens on April 2 with a stand-alone night game - Jason Akermanis' debut for Glenorchy against Clarence at KGV starting at 6pm.

The season kicks off in full the following week when Hobart tackles the Pies at the TCA ground, North Launceston and South Launceston clash at Aurora Stadium, Clarence heads north to play Burnie at West Park, Lauderdale hosts North Hobart, and Launceston is at home at Windsor Park against last year's beaten grand finalists Devonport.

Loses and Gains

January 16th 2011 01:20
Hobart are expected to gain some faces back to the club from Queensland this year, after they had a bit of an exodus of players that departed the club to Queensland. So far this season they have lost the following players Sam Hall (New Norfolk), Jeremy Howe (Melbourne Demons), Aaron Hall (Queensland), Blair Kean (Western Austaralia), George Burbury (Geelong Cats)

Aaron Hall and Sam Hall were both rumoured with leaving Hobart, Aaron interstate, while Sam, who isn't any relation was heading back to New Norfolk.

George Burbury was getting interest from Collingwood, St. Kilda and eventually Geelong where he ended up in the Rookie Draft. Jeremy Howe arrived last year at the club, and made an impact straight away pulling off some great marks, and played well during the season, like Russell Robertson before him, his big marking caught the eye of the Demons and he became a draft surprise.

Briggs and Stride are reportedly heading back to Tasmania from Queensland, both departed the club to head up there to Queensland, though some are saying Briggs may join up with some former Tigers at Melbourne Grammar, Right now though, the only confirmed outs are the Halls, Kean, Howe, Burbury.

Today the career of veteran Tiger Justin Harvey came to an end as the Tigers were smashed by 74 points by premiership contender Launceston at the TCA Ground today. Harvey officially holds the club record at the Hobart Football Club, it was made officially during the first quarter when he ran onto the ground.

The Tigers had a horrible season this season, they went 7 weeks without a win, and then managed to thump Glenorchy at the TCA Ground. But alas the Tigers have not been able to build on that win and their season came to an end this afternoon at the TCA Ground

A finals contender?

May 30th 2010 07:43
Hobart has had a mixed start to the season, they managed to upset the Demons last weekend putting them into the top 6 for the first time since the start of the Tasmanian State League. Yesterday Lauderdale who were soundly beaten by the Magpies at Bellerive last week came out and managed to take the points away from the Tigers at their home ground of the TCA Ground, something that most pundits wouldn't have tipped.

Before the start of the season the Tigers were hoping to play finals, they are a young side they have had key injuries in different stages of this season, they took Devonport and Clarence to their limits in the first halves at the TCA Ground this season but were wiped out in the second half. Even yesterday the Tigers held the Bombers scoreless in one of the quarters but were soundly beaten, the Tigers play Glenorchy who were soundly beaten as well yesterday, the winner next week could possibly see themselves in the six at the end of the round
