Clarence Premiership coach Brett Geappen (left), and Captain Nick Paine (right) celebrate 2010's triumph over Glenorchy
Last seasons TSL Premiers will be facing Glenorchy in the first Round of the 2010 TSL Season. The clash will be live on ABC TV 2.10pm on Saturday April 3rd. The full list of list changes have not been announced yet but Clarence have lost Ben Setchell, and Brad Dutton to retirement, Jeromey Webberley, and Daniel Archer have both been drafted to the AFL. Archer heads to St. Kilda, where as Webberley has been drafted by the Tigers. Clarence have recently gained Matthew Geappen, brother of coach Brett. Glenorchy has official lost Shane Piuselli to Coburg, Andrew Nash possibly to retirement, and Ryan Harwood to the Brisbane Lions after he was drafted, but they have gained Michael Darcy from Cygnet the champion full forward from the SFL.
Glenorchy have also from all reports been seeking out New Norfolk players who are their feeder club and have apparently signed them ahead of the season. People are claiming the Shayne Moles, cousin of Brodie who is at the Western Bulldogs now has not in fact left Glenorchy for Clarence.
Glenorchy came from behind to almost snatch a memerable Grand Final win, but a Webberley goal clinched a nail biting premiership win by the Roos. The Clarence/Glenorchy rivalry is one that is pretty close to that of Collingwood/Carlton with both teams having a hatred, the fans hate each other but deep down there is a respect there that makes this a rivalry that will make Round 1 a cracking way to start the TSL Season.
Last season the Magpies were in the season opener as the Southern Premiers taking on the reigning Northern Premiers, the Blues from Launceston took the points, but failed to fire in the finals the Magpies however after a loss to Hobart went on a 9 game winning steak, leading into the finals and blew away the Dockers at Bellerive oval to set up a Grand final showdown.
The Roos managed to get into the finals to play their other rival North Hobart on a wet day at Bellerive Oval, the game was close before the Roos blew the Demons away. The Roos then met the Magpies from the North in Devonport, a game that was meant for North Hobart, but the ground was deemed unsuitable, the game was moved amidst protested by Devonport coach Errol Bourne, and fans alike.
The game ended with the Roos again running away victorious setting up a clash with the Dockers at Aurora Stadium. Former AFL star, and former Devil Justin Plapp who is now at Werribee as a part time coach had the final kick of the game, to win the game he missed sending Clarence into a Grand Final that they were lucky to make they finished the stronger and a way ward kick at goal saw the Dockers crash out of the finals in straight sets.
Clarence jumped the Magpies early in the Grand Final and were looking at blowing the Magpies away, after half time the Magpies fought back, and almost stole an unlikely premiership from the Roos which looked before that all but gone. A classic grand final ended what was a classic first season of TSL Football, 2010 promises to be much better and much better.
The clash of the titans will happen live and only on ABC Tasmania, also on ABC Radio, a full preview and list changes will be posted in this blog.
