Preview

One of football's biggest rivalries kicks off the new TSL Season, the back to back TSL Premiers Clarence head across the river to face fierce rivals Glenorchy. In what will be a histroic match, only is Jason Akermanis going to bring Akermania to KGV but we're switching the lights on. For time ever at KGV Oval the lights are on, the footy's on, and we will see an intense battle.

Glenorchy and Clarence have an intense dislike for each other, it's been that way for years, they've met in Grand Finals, they've met in finals and they've even met in the streets. Clarence has had the upper hand on the Magpies of late, winning their last 3 clashes including an epic Grand Final meeting in 2009.

Clarence has built themselves a fortress at Bellerive Oval which has seen them win every game there since the inception of the TSL, Glenorchy up until last season dominated the Roos at KGV Oval. Injuries and departures last season hurt the Magpies, Clarence, brought the now retired Matthew Geappen back home, and saw them unleash Matthew Richardson Medal winner Trent Standen shine as the best young star in the state,

Brett Greappen dominated at Full Forward, a void the Roos had to fill when injury plagued premiership Full Forward Brad Dutton finally hung up the boots. Geappeans season was so good at Full Forward he didn't have to play the last few rounds of the season to win the Tassie Medal. Of course, Zane Murphy was the actual winner, but suspension ruled him out of the medal, thus handing it to Geappen.

The Tassie Medallists career was ended by a neck injury he suffered against North Launceston at Bellerive Oval. Geappen tried to make a comeback for the Roos in the finals, but didn't get the legal clearance to make his return.

The Magpies lost captain Jesse Crouch late last season to a knee injury, he tried as well to make an unlikely return but it was not to be and the Magpies' finals saw them win the one final and was knocked out by their other arch rival North Hobart. This season the Magpies will welcome back former captain Crouch, premiership plays Sam Chivers, Shayne Moles, and David Kameric all from season ending injuries.

Returning to the Magpies nest after time over in Queensland is Clinton French, the Magpies have recruited well in the off season, managing to snag Rhys Mott from Devonport, the Grandson of club legend Jim Manson also from Devonport Ben Brown, who will have a later start to the season he suffered a knee injury last season.

Ben Reynolds, one of the state's top Cente Half Forwards also joined the Pies, not only as a player but as a coach as well. Clarence on the other hand they have welcomed back Stuart Beechey from retirement, Mitch Williamson from Lauderdale, Jack Boon from Hutchins, and bring into the side George Fitzgibbon from Canberra club Eastlake, Josh Nibbs from St. Virgil's former Demon Tom Balcombe who returns from QAFL club Broadbeach.

The Roos have lost midfield star Joshua Green to the AFL, Trent Whitelaw to OHA, and Clinton Riley to Smithton, while both Geappens have retired. Cameron Blight will have a late start to 2011, and will play in the second half of the season.

Glenorchys loses include Bryce O'Garey who went to Leeton-Whitton, following Cal Garvey, Jade Hodge was offered a coaching role up there, but he decided to stay with Glenorchy. Michael Darcy who was the clubs leading goalkicker last season has joined Channel as a coach, and Chris Glenn has left for Queensland.

Cameron Thurley this week has come out and said they will be treating Akermanis like any other Glenorchy player, and for him not to expect any special treatment. In a Glenorchy/Clarence clash did anyone expect anyone to go easy on anyone? Both teams got into a bit of a fight in the streets outside of a bar last season, this season, both clubs have eased into their pre-season games, saving themselves clearly for this one.

Akermanis and Cameron Thurley appear to be opponents this week, the battle in the midfield is going to be an interesting one, the Magpies able to put Rhys Mott in their midfield, battle of the forwardlines will see David Hunt and Savage battle, Savage would normally be his opponent but this season would be one of his rivals. Savage arrived at Clarence as a defender, but pressed forward and started kicking goals.

Clarence have Ben Setchell getting more game time, you could expect to see Gregg Sharman to pick up Ben Reynolds, may see Aker sneak into the Glenorchy midfield at some point during the game.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jason Akermanis (Glenorchy) - The hype surrounding Akermanis and his debut for the Magpies has made him the one to watch from Glenorchy. The 3 time Brisbane Lions Premiership player and Brownlow medallist has not played a game since the Western Bulldogs cut him loose, he was the biggest signing in the offseason and says he wants to try and save Tasmanian Football. But the question remains, can Akermanis have an impact with Glenorchy? Surely the Magpies' new recruit is going to be a big pay off for the Pies on and off the field this year.

Cameron Thurley (Clarence) –
Rumoured as the opponent for Akermanis, he has “fired the first shot” as they say at the Brownlow Medallists and has said not to expect a bit of treatment, Thurley was the best in the 2010 Grand Final, one of the Roos' most consistent performers. ABC Commentators were discussing his possibilities of making a return to the AFL. He can go forward, he can go back, and he can play in the middle, he's three players in one, and he can be damaging in all three positions, it was showed last season.

QUESTION MARKS

Jason Akermanis playing his first game for Glenorchy, a big crowd is expected, a big game, Aker is coming from a short stint in the VFL after he was in the Western Bulldogs' Doghouse, can Akermanis make a successful jump into the TSL and lead the Magpies to a big win over their arch rivals?

Clarence are dual premiers now in the Tasmanian State League, only had the one loss, and were pushed by Devonport at Bellerive, before they crushed them in the last quarter, Clarence then easily accounted for the Northern Magpies with ease in the Grand Final, but with the hype around this game, would it be the travelling Roos the first to crumble under the big game pressure?

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY

The first game of the season, the cliché is, that anyone can wijn at any time this is one of those games that there are so many unknown factors. Glenorchy debuting Akermanis, Reynolds and Mott welcoming back players from injuries and playing at home in one of the biggest games in Tasmanian Football history. Clarence one of the toughest teams to beat, they went through the season and lost the one game and were pushed for three quarters in games before blowing them away.

Being an objective party here, trying to pick a winner is difficult, the inclusions in the Glenorchy side make them stronger then they were last season, and the Roos despite having no Blight, nor either Geappen and Green are still a strong side. But being at KGV Oval underlights with the Magpie Army, that could see the Magpies home in this game. Byron Howard is coaching his first game for Glenorchy, and bringing out a strong side to meet the powerful Roos. Should the Roos manage to eliminate the Aker factor, close off Mott, and keep Bowden, Cox, Bowring from being a presence in the game, they themselves can win the game.

It's going to be a classice match, and a very close one and I am tipping the Magpies to just come away with the points, but I am not at all discounting a Clarence win. Glenorchy playing at home should be able to find a way to beat the Roos this time around, and get themselves the mental edge over their bitter rivals.
