SUMMARY
The season comes down to this, a showdown at North Hobart Oval between the Demons and the Bombers, two sides that let slip the double chance last weekend. North Hobart last season had a losing end to the season much like this season last year Hobart beat them and then Clarence belted them. North Launceston were gifted a chance to play finals last season when the Demons were beaten by Hobart, but Devonport belted the Bombers and that ended the former dominating team of the 1990s sitting on the sidelines.
The result of tonight's game is now known and the winner of this game will be meeting Glenorchy next weekend, while the loser will play no further part in 2010. North Launceston have beaten Glenorchy this season, North Hobart have struggled both times allowing Glenorchy to run out winners. This game though sees one team who was one of the teams of the 1990s play a team that had a decent 1990s but never really dominated.
But let's backtrack a moment to last weekend and see how we got here, The Bombers managed to lose by 10 points to a wasteful Devonport, the Magpies had 30 scoring shots, and that should have seen them home for this game, but Devonport managed to hang onto the game and win setting up a cash for the Northern Bombers against North Hobart at North Hobart. The Demons haven't managed to beat Glenorchy at all since the new TSL started, their last win over them came in the finals of 2008 at KGV Oval.
The Demons fought back to hit the lead in the last quarter. However, the surge was short-lived, as Glenorchy with the help of Jonathan Bowring booting four goals and Simon Spencer dominating the ruck. Glenorchy like Devonport were wasteful, and could have blown this side out of the water, now North Hobart again in an elimination final faces a Bombers side that wants to make a statement, a statement they thought they made back when they beat Glenorchy at KGV Oval.
When these sides last met back in Round 15 at Aurora Stadium, North Launceston were on a 3 game losing streak, and North Hobart led by 33-points at half time after restricting the Northern Bombers to just one goal before the long break.
But after half time the Northern Bombers awoke from a slumber, and they managed to turn the game completelyon its head, led by Justin Cotton kicking two goals from centre half-forward and setting up many more, while Darren Crawford chipped in with three majors. It seems whatever Coach Paul Atkin said at the half time break worked, and the Demons only managed to score 2 goals in the second half, as they limply let all the good first half work slip.
These two teams have only met twice since the new TSL and both times they have been at Aurora Stadium, this will be their first meeting at North Hobart Oval. This should have the Demons feeling confident coming into this clash against the Bombers.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Paul Allison (North Hobart) – His season started off pretty badly, with the team he was going to coach Kermandie going back into recess the former Swan was left without a club. He made the return to North Hobart and he has not looked back, he has become a good goalkicker for the Demons and he is going to be one player the Demons will hope to see kick a bag.
Darren Crawford (North Launceston) – The small forward is going to need to kick a bag for the Bombers, they only have a few men that can kick goals for them and they are going to need Crawford to do so this weekend if they are going to win the game.
QUESTION MARKS
They say history does not repeat, but the Demons are heading into another finals series with a loss, they are playing at home this time around, but will history repeat for the Demons and they will go out of another finals series without firing a shot?
The Northern Bombers have not played many finals in recent years, this is their first TSL Finals Series, they used to be a team that most teams feared this time of year, can Andrew McLean assist the Bombers in reinventing this fear? Or are the Bombers going to struggle against a team that has felt a lot of finals action and heartache?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
North Hobart are playing at home, they are playing a venue in which most of the current Northern Bombers players have never played at. The former Devils that are playing at North Launceston would have many memories of this oval, and so would Andrew McLean who has played in winning and losing Grand Final sides at this venue in the past.
The travel as well is going to get the best of the Bombers, they are going to find it tough to come down from North Launceston, play on a new venue, and be competitive. But this is another one of the finals games that can go either way, Glenorchy would be patiently watching this game and looking ahead to next week when they face one of these two teams.
But even though Glenorchy has beaten North Hobart every time they have met them, and have only lost 1 game against North Launceston since the new TSL does not mean they are going to beat either side come finals time.
