Dodges haunts Kingborough

IN consecutive weeks Kingborough has lost by 21 points, this time at the hands of second on the ladder Dodges Ferry at Shark Park yesterday.

The scoreline wasn't the only parallel with its loss to New Norfolk, as the win was again within reach up until three-quarter time only to be wrenched away in the final term.

The tough match was a war of attrition and the Sharks eventually showed why they are the form team of the competition winning 14.17 (101) to 12.8 (80).

Both sides played with slightly under-strength lists because of injury and representative duties, but that didn't stop the game turning into an arm wrestle fought mostly at ground level.

Hard tackling and poor marking characterised much of the match as both teams tested each other's running fitness.

After a seven-point quarter time deficit the Tigers came out firing with three goals on the trot to start the second term.

Dodges Ferry responded, but its inaccuracy gave the visitors a one point lead at half-time.

"We probably made the job a bit harder by missing a lot of goals we should have kicked," Sharks coach Danny Ling said.

The minor scoring continued in the third with the two teams notching up eight minor scores before Kingborough kicked the first goal of the quarter.

Despite closing in on its 10-point deficit early in last term Kingborough couldn't match the Sharks' pace as the home side went on a scoring spree with four goals unanswered until too late.

Dodges Ferry had eight goal-kickers for the match, Nathan Griffith the best with three.

Kingborough shared its goals between seven players, Ollie Burke, Braden Livingston, Michael Booth, Beau Webster and Chris Elliott kicking two each.

The fast rebound of the Sharks' half-backline contributed to their dominance at the end of the match.

"In the last quarter our half back line were fantastic - Ty Little, Zac Waller and Tim Cannon refused to let them through and setup a lot of run for us," Ling said.

The Sharks' coach was happy with their position on the way to the finals.

"Realistically we should be able to get a double chance from here.

"We've pretty well locked in a top two spot," Ling said.

In other SFL matches yesterday, Cygnet 13.9 (87) was too strong for Sorell 4.12 (36) and New Norfolk continued its strong form by dominating the Central Hawks 23.15 (153) to 7.5 (47).

Claremont 29.15 (189) continued Triabunna's miserable season winning 29.15 (189) to 7.14 (56).
