Devonport's green light

DEVONPORT has officially had its TSL license reinstated and is now all set to go for the 2011 season.

Last year's grand finalist lost its license after total debts ballooned to $500,000, including a loss of more than $70,000 during last season.

But the community rallied and raised $100,000 and saved the club at the 11th hour.

The old board folded, with a caretaker board in place to be elected in at a special general meeting in a fortnight.

AFL Tasmania chief executive Scott Wade handed over the license yesterday.

"We've met with the group of people that will become the new board and to be quite honest we are really quite excited about the club's future," Wade said.

"The past is the past and everyone is moving on quite quickly."

Leon Perry is the only 2010 board member now part of the caretaker board.

"It has taken this significant issue the club has dealt with to be a wake up call for the club and the community that things need to change," Wade said.

"The 2010 board went from a profit to an almost $70,000 loss last year, but it has been the 2010 board who has worked hard to generate the $100,000 to save the club.

"There needs to be some credit given to the board that in a crisis rallied the community and got the community to support them.

"There is clearly community support otherwise the club would not have raised that money in a couple of weeks."

But the news is not all good with captain and inaugural TSL Tassie medallist Kurt Heazlewood announcing he will be leaving the club to move to Perth for work.

Cash injection saves Devonport

By James Bresnehan

AFL Tasmania had given the beleaguered club until the close of business yesterday to prove it could trade its way out of a $500,000 debt.

The league announced late yesterday that Devonport had successfully secured a cash injection that would ensure its presence in the State League next season.

The Magpies will field a senior and colts team in 2011 after demonstrating it could meet its financial obligations.

"A number of donations from generous club and community supporters have injected $100,000 into the operations of the club, meaning it can now pay its current liabilities," said AFL Tasmania's chief executive Scott Wade.

"This is a very good outcome for the club and the competition.

"It is now AFL Tasmania's intention to reinstate the Tasmanian State League licence agreement between the two parties.

"AFL Tasmania has agreed to work with the management of the Devonport Football Club as soon as we return from the Christmas and New Year break to finalise all of the details concerning the reinstatement of Devonport's TSL licence agreement.

"We commend the acting president of the Devonport Football Club, Shane Yates, and other members of the club in their efforts to secure $100,000 to save the Devonport Magpies.

"This significant achievement reinforces the passion and genuine spirit for our game up on the North West Coast.

"While this has been an unfortunate and disappointing episode, it has strongly reinforced that if any TSL club cannot meet its financial obligations, then their tenure in the TSL may well be short lived.

"It is a basic requirement that all clubs are financially prudent and remain fiscally sound."

Sponsor unaware of extent of debt

THE MAJOR SPONSOR BY CHRIS PIPPOS

THE major sponsor of the troubled Devonport Football Club says he was shocked to learn the full extent of its financial woes, while neither ruling in or out further assistance beyond the sponsorship.

Adam Brooks, whose Devonport-based company Total Performance Sports contributes a "significant amount" as the club's major sponsor, said this would not change next year provided the club resolved its debt problems.

The club's future hangs in the balance after it emerged it had liabilities of $507,000, being much worse than first thought.

The clock is now ticking after AFL Tasmania gave it until December 23 to prove it is solvent or face being axed from the Tasmanian State League.

"I knew there was some debt there and I knew there was some financial pressures but I didn't know the full extent, but I didn't ask because we were happy with the performance of the team last year and exposure the sports store got," said Mr Brooks, also a Braddon Liberal MP and the party's small business spokesman.

"The extent of the financial difficulty that I read about in the paper today, I didn't know about but I also didn't see it as my business."

Mr Brooks said he was not the benefactor who helped make player payments or a guarantor for the $250,000 council loan.

However, asked if he would provide further assistance if the club was about to fold, Mr Brooks said he would need to be very careful and cautious given the situation and his role as an MP.

"I would probably have to consider it carefully.

"I would not rule it in but I would not rule it out either.

"If it wasn't financial support I would probably help in some other way."
