Pie wins opposition's support

DEVONPORT captain and reigning Tassie Medallist Kurt Heazlewood has received support from an unlikely source as he prepares for tonight's TSL tribunal appearance.

Heazlewood was reported in the first quarter of Saturday's two-point win over North Hobart for a front-on bump that saw the Demons' Caden Wilson stretchered from the ground.

The former St Kilda draftee is an essential player if the Northern Magpies are to defeat Launceston in Friday night's preliminary final at Aurora Stadium.

But North Hobart president and Mercury columnist Darryn Perry said Heazlewood should have little to fear.

"I'd be very surprised if he went for that," Perry said.

"Basically it was a courageous Caden fighting for the ball and basically ran into him. Kurt Heazlewood is certainly not the type of player who is going to go in there and try and clean someone up.

"It was a surprising report."

Perry said Wilson only suffered a touch of concussion.

Devonport president Steve Daley said the club would be defending its skipper tonight.

"We strongly believe that he doesn't have a case to answer and we will be stating that," Daley said.

After an up and down season, the Demons found some form in the finals, defeating North Launceston and Glenorchy before Saturday's narrow loss to Devonport on a water-logged Devonport Oval.

Perry said there were plenty of positives to come from the year.

"Considering the conditions it was a terrific game of football where both sides gave it everything," Perry said.

"Unfortunately there had to be a loser and it was us but it could have gone either way.

"The last month our guys have really bonded and it should hold us in good stead for next year. They were terrific."

Playing-coach Clinton Brown is contracted for next year, while the Demons will also regain star recruit Nathan Street.

Street missed the Demons' last 12 games due to a knee injury.

"I'm really happy with the steps forward we've made this year and with good depth, we are looking forward to going further next year and we should do," Perry said.

Young star Sam Darley is the only confirmed loss at this stage as he is off to join the AFL's newest team, Greater Western Sydney.

Young Pie to bury Demons

RAIN, hail or shine in today's elimination final between Devonport and North Hobart, there will be one Magpies playmaker the Demons will be looking to keep in check.
Potential AFL draftee Rhys Mott has only one aim today: helping Devonport beat North Hobart.

Consistent Magpie Rhys Mott will be doing everything he can to lead his side deeper into the finals.

A vice-captain of the Mariners' successful under-18 championship side earlier in the year, the 18-year-old can consider himself unlucky to not be on the radar of some AFL clubs.

Last year, he was a member of the AIS-AFL Academy, and was shaping up as a potential Gold Coast prospect alongside fellow North-West pair Luke Russell and Mav Weller.

The St Brendan Shaw College student possesses a booming left foot and is highly rated by the Magpies, who have named him in their bests on nine occasions from 13 games - including first mention seven times.

But regardless of how his AFL dreams pan out he was overlooked for the national draft camp Mott knows he has given everything he had for both his state and Devonport.

"I feel I've had a pretty good season," Mott said yesterday.

"I really don't know [about being drafted], as much as I would love to.

"I thought I went pretty well during the national championships, I did everything I could do."

Mott's attention is firmly on the Demons today, with the Magpies looking to bounce back from last weekend's heavy loss to Launceston, and also avenge a home loss to North Hobart earlier in the season.

"They had it over us at the start of the year but the team has grown," he said, adding: "I have full faith in the group that we can get over the line."

Other McDonald seizes chance

DEVONPORT'S Chris McDonald is the first to admit he is not the key player opposition clubs turn their attention to when coming up against the Magpies.

But his recent consistent form will have Launceston giving greater attention to the half-forward in today's third qualifying final at Aurora Stadium.
Chris McDonald gets his kick away under pressure.

McDonald, the older brother of Brad, has kicked at least one goal in his last seven games to have 20 for the season, including two in last Saturday night's 50-point mauling of Glenorchy.

"That is one good thing about having good players in the side, you fly under the radar a little bit, which is good," McDonald, 24, said yesterday.

"I make sure they get all the attention.

"But this time of the year not many players do fly under the radar, you do need to step up because there are not many dud players in the finals sides."

It is McDonald's second year at the Magpies, having transferred from NTFL side Penguin to play in the state league and alongside Brad.

But Brad will be missing today with a hamstring, while it was Chris who was plagued by injury last year, sidelined for 11 games with a medial ligament strain.

"I'm starting to find my feet," the roof plumber said.

"This is the first year I've gone without an injury. I missed half of last year so it is just good to be playing reasonably consistent footy and to be injury free."

In the last meeting with the Blues, Devonport led all day only to be run over in the final quarter to go down by four points.

"We know we can match it with them," he said.

"We have just got to have the right attitude and play 120 minutes."

Magpies have Devine dream

June 7th 2010 11:15
Recently retired Robbie Devine has caught the eye of Devonport's coach Errol Bourn as a possible coach for the club. Devine has only just walked away from the game 4 games short of being a record holder, 30 odd goals away from being their greatest goakicker up there with a champion by the name of Byron Howard who has joined arch rivals Glenorchy as an assistant this season. But Robbie Devine has been scouted as a possible new coach, North Hobart are expecting Devine to come aboard as soon as he comes back from a holiday on the North West Coast of Tasmania.

Devonport have been sending out the feelers for Devine, while he is on the coast, Devine has family on the North West Coast and that is what the Magpies are hoping will be the thing that sees him head to the Magpies, and not to return to the Demons. Devine has not yet spoken about his future post football, he has talked to coach Clinton Brown before his announcement that he could return as a coach, but now seems to have his name on a list
