CONTROVERSIAL former Hawthorn ruckman and larger than life AFL personality Peter "Spida" Everitt will conduct training for Devonport tonight.
Everitt and Western Bulldogs legend Doug Hawkins will be involved in a sports forum later tonight at the club.
Devonport has a bye this weekend in the second part of the TSL split round 15 and coach Errol Bourn promised his players something different for training this week after Saturday's big win over South Launceston.
Apart from not being able to train on the waterlogged Devonport Oval on Tuesday night, and being sent on a road run instead, the Magpies' squad is certainly getting what Bourn promised with Everitt's involvement.
Everitt played 180 games with St Kilda before being traded to Hawthorn in 2003 following a series of off-field indiscretions and disciplinary problems, including a $20,000 fine for racially abusing another player.
He then played a total of 72 games with the Hawks before being traded to Sydney in 2007, where he played a further 39 games before retiring in 2008.
During his career, Everitt was twice honoured with all- Australian selection and kicked 383 goals in his 291 games with the three clubs.
Since retiring Everitt and his wife, Sheree, have their own TV show called Great Australian Doorstep, where they travel around Australia by motorhome visiting smaller regional centres.
Tonight's function starts at 8pm and tickets are available from the club at a cost of $30 per head, including supper.
Meanwhile, Devonport players will use Saturday's bye to travel to Launceston and watch the State League match between Clarence and Launceston at Windsor Park.
Devonport will play Launceston the following week at Aurora Stadium.
"The first week after the bye last time was our worst game of the year, and we don't want the same this time - that's why we're mixing things up a bit with training this week," Bourn said.
