SUMMARY
The Grand Final replay sees the Roos host the Magpies back at Bellerive Oval where they did not lose a game at all last season, even though they came close a couple of times, first against Launceston, who they managed to get out of jail against by booting behinds and not goals, and the Grand Final against Glenorchy where a Glenorchy turnover to Jeromey Webberley lead to a long goal to put the Roos a goal ahead and that is how it would stay as the siren sounded. The honors were even in their clashes last season, the Roos won both their games at Bellerive, Glenorchy won both of their games at KGV Oval.
Both teams have had some experienced loses, Clarence losing Jeromey Webberley, Daniel Archer, Brad Dutton and Ben Setchell, Glenorchy have lost Piuselli, and Nash. Glenorchy were also expected to lose a couple of others but seems to have retained a full list minus Nash, Harwood and Piuselli. Clarence have managed to bolster their list pretty well over Summer gaining Brennan Savage, Stuart Whitelaw and Matthew Geappen, while they also have Thurley, Drury backing up this season, which will cover the loses by the Kangaroos over the summer.
Glenorchy signed Jade Hodge, former New Norfolk star who returned to Tasmania this season, star Cygnet forward Michael Darcy who has a wealth of experience down there in the SFL, and will be hoping that he can bring it up to the big time as he challenges those talented backmen of the Roos.
This will be the first time the two teams have faced each other on a Monday Night under lights at Bellerive Oval, and what a cracking game it will be arch rivals who went to the limits in the 2009 Grand Final, and after that encounter in the Grand Final there should be a good crowd to witness the Grand Final replay.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brennan Savage (Clarence) – Making his debut for the Roos, the former Devils & Blues backman will be a very important part of the Roos defense this season, and defense of the premiership, he enters the Roos facing a possible tough task against Michael Darcy if they send him that way, but he could also be on the younger David Hunt.
Michael Darcy (Glenorchy) – He has had a very good pre-season, and was a good forward for the Cygnet Football Club, his experience and ability is what is going to be needed to help Glenorchy over the line, he is partnering David Hunt this season, the young Glenorchy forward at times had his yips in front of goal but could get some valuable advice from the more experienced Darcy.
QUESTION MARKS
Clarence lost a bit of experience with the retiring of forward Brad Dutton, and midfielder Ben Setchell, they have recruited two former Devils into the side, and managed to bring back Whitelaw from Victoria, is this enough for them to overcome the young Magpies? Can Brennan Savage fit into this Roos backline without any troubles and what about Matthew Geappens knee will he be the ball magnet he was at the Demons this season?
Michael Darcy would be the biggest question mark for the Magpies this season, and this game, an experienced forward Darcy played for South against North a few years back with the top stars of the Premier League, and the top stars of the NTFL now he enters the TSL for his first game, can he make an impact for the Magpies? He has started with a bang in practice matches, but is this enough to show he can hang with the TSL boys? The Magpies also lost former captain Shane Piuselli to Coburg, and have also lost Andrew Nash who retired, will their departure be a massive blow to the Magpie chances in 2010?
WHO WILL WIN AND WHY
Clarence appear unbeatable at Bellerive, they have always had the wood on Glenorchy on the Eastern shore back in the TFL days, and it carried on into the SFL and then SFL Premier League, but the Magpies started to find a wy to win at Bellerive and have apart from their early clash in the year last year been very competitive and very close, back in Round 2 Glenorchy were within an arms reach of beating the Roos, the Pies lead going into the final change but the Roos ran riot in the last and the Magpies just gave up.
Their return matches saw Glenorchy claim the points in both games at KGV Oval, the Magpies jumped the Roos at the start and just cruised into wins, even though the Roos almost managed to steal a very unlikely win against the Magpies in Round 15. The game is going to be very close, as have most of their encounters, the Magpies have a few questions they are going to need to ask themselves, can they put the Grand Final loss behind them, and start off with a big start, and not allow the Roos to get a run on?
Or are the Roos going to be too strong with those massive inclusions into the side? This is the first big test for the Magpies, and my prediction is, they are not going to pass it not at Bellerive the Roos have built a fortress at Bellerive and I do not see many teams this season beating them there either, look out for the Roos if they are back into the Grand Final again this season, they know how to control Bellerive Oval and this is where the Magpies have many nightmares.
