Clarence machine shreds Pies

Clarence's Mitchell Swan is too fast for Glenorchy's Jake Cox
For the first time this season the unbeaten, raging premiership favourite looked vulnerable before the first bounce.

No Brett Geappen, no Cameron Thurley, no Matthew Drury, no Trent Whitelaw, no Aaron McVilly and no Josh Green.

Arch-rival Glenorchy might have been missing Bryce and David O'Garey and key defenders Daniel Muir and Shayne Moles, but with the Roos fielding two debutants -- one Charlie Riewoldt -- and a host of inexperienced senior footballers, the ladder leader looked ready to be skinned.

Four quarters later the home side had smashed the Magpies 18.7 (115) to 9.10 (64) to claim the Linton-Bingley Cup and bury any fears regarding their premiership credentials.

It was a performance which highlighted the depth of the Clarence list, with the seasoned heads of a few veterans paving the way early.

Ben Setchell, who made a shock return after retiring from the game following the grand final last year, didn't miss a beat on his way to 33 possessions and a goal, while Matthew Geappen collected 34 and jagged an important second-term goal as well.

Brad Coad booted four goals and somehow continually found himself without an opponent across half forward, while Riewoldt booted two, had a hand in a couple of others and provided some spark with his defensive pressure in the forward 50.

The Roos had winners all over the ground with Gregg Sharman, Tim Castle and Cameron Blight shutting down the Magpies' avenue to goal, Brennan Savage provided a target all day and Nick Paine kicked three goals playing predominantly across half-forward.

Coach Brett Geappen admitted to a few pre-game nerves about how Setchell would perform, and also hailed the way the youngest of the Riewoldt clan acquitted himself.

"That was probably our second best win behind beating Launceston up there [at Windsor Park]," Geappen said.

"It was one of those decisions, I was going to look either good or stupid and I knew that going into the game [about Setchell].

"He [Riewoldt] has certainly got that X-factor, which every side needs. He kicked two and probably had a hand in two or three goals through his outstanding pressure."

It was a more sombre mood in the Glenorchy rooms, which had its three-match winning streak broken.

The Magpies were never out of the match until halfway through the last quarter when the home side piled on five consecutive goals, but never really threatened either.

"We are just not ready to compete with them yet. The margin reflected the gap between the two sides. We wanted to show improvement today and we just didn't do that," coach Ben Reid said.

In the other two State League matches yesterday Burnie stunned North Launceston 16.12 (108) to 8.8 (56), booting 11 goals to four after half-time to see the club sit just outside the top six on percentage.

Devonport overcame a dogged Hobart by 20 points at home to keep its top two aspirations alive
