NOT even a six-goal final term from the Burnie Dockers was enough to snatch victory against Launceston on Saturday, going down by 12 points.
Written off at the start of the season, Burnie has played like a true finals team over the last month, with three straight wins, but this one slipped just out of reach.
"We were beaten but weren't disgraced," Burnie coach Brent Plant said.
Plant also said there weren't enough guys willing to get to the next level.
"We can use today as a huge stepping stone and we can learn," he said.
A stiff breeze met both sides at West Park and Launceston used it to perfection.
Burnie had plenty of opportunities to score, but only managed one goal for the quarter.
Adrian and Brian Finch were able to find space and cause a lot of headaches.
Two first-quarter goals to Adrian had Launceston out to a 30-point lead at quarter time.
Burnie youngster Rudy Barrett did a brilliant job of keeping goal- kicking machine Brian Finch to just two goals for the game, ensuring his influence on the game was at a minimum.
Stephen Blizzard did another stellar job at centre half back on Jason Edwards.
With the wind in the second quarter, Burnie was on a mission to erase the 20-point deficit.
But skill errors and ability to adapt to the wet cost it several scoring opportunities and only brought back the margin by one point to still be 19 points behind at half-time.
Launceston looked to put the game beyond doubt in the third as the lead blew out beyond 50 points.
Launceston backed its run and was able to make all scoring opportunities count.
Brentyn Milverton was able to sneak forward and booted four late goals for Burnie.
The Dockers had the momentum in the final term with the wind, but time ran out on what could have been a memorable win.
