Dockers a chance for finals

January 20th 2011 13:43
Last season saw the exodus that was threatening to send the Burnie Dockers into recess, and were heavily tipped the win the wooden spoon. The season came and the Dockers were almost a chance for finals after a decent start to the season they hit a bit of a roadblock. They had to beat Glenorchy at home late in the season to close the gap to make it. But the Magpies managed to hang on and beat Burnie and ended their chances of making the finals, now fast forward to 2011, Burnie have managed to capture back 2 former players, and even secure Jason Laycock back to the state.

Laycock who was a chance to head to the Giants under Sheedy but he decided he wanted to stay in Tasmania. Now the Dockers are a chance, I would say to make the finals, they are a young side, and if they secure the young Penguin player they are chasing the sky very well could be the limit for the Dockers.

Plant entered the club with a lot of people questioning the appointment of him, saying that the players had no desire to listen to him, and would up and leave the club. Most have said that was the reason they left, who knows? It could have been but they retained some good players, managed to get some better young players, and now they stood tall against the odds.

With the Devonport exodus this season, it could mean that Burnie could sneak into the top 6 and become a finalist after their massive exodus last season which lead them to drop their reserves last season.

Burnie does seem to be the only team outside the finals that are going to make a charge for the finals, Lauderdale are still getting into the swing of being in the TSL, Hobart have their trouble, South Launceston are still going to need to find some players to make them competitive.

Both South Launceston and Lauderdale recruited a lot of youngsters last season, and are looking to the future for their club, with Burnie having that mixture of youth and experience that last season wasn't enough for them, but a season later it could.

STAR Burnie recruit Jason Laycock has turned down a potential offer from Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy in order to focus on a "normal" life.

Laycock, who was delisted by Essendon, spent five of his eight years in the AFL system under Sheedy at the Bombers since been taken with the No.10 pick in 2002.

The pair met in Melbourne on Monday with Sheedy confirming he had discussed the possibility of luring the 201cm, 103kg ruckman to the Giants, who have the first eight selections in the rookie draft.

As with Gold Coast last year, Sheedy's GWS can draft delisted players such as Laycock and play them in the secondary competition, with the Giants playing in the North-Eastern League, before they become part of the team's first senior list in 2012.

"We need a ruckman and I spoke to Laycock," Sheedy said.

ut Laycock said yesterday his sole focus was on getting back on the park for the Burnie Dockers in the TSL next season.

The 26-year-old has been plagued by injuries and managed just 58 AFL games with the Bombers.

"It's not something I'm entertaining," Laycock said.

"I told Kevin I needed to get my body right and maybe, if I had a good year next year, then maybe I could consider it again at the end of the season.

"I was very surprised."

Dockers may lose Laycock to Sheedy

Speculation is rife that Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy may look to delisted Essendon ruckman Jason Laycock.

The Burnie Dockers have recruited Laycock, but may lose him to the new AFL team.

Laycock is one of several players with AFL experience Sheedy has spoken to in recent days with an eye to picking up some mature talent in the December 7 rookie draft.

The Giants have the first eight picks in that draft and plan to use some of them to add some experience to a list stacked with talented teenagers.

"We need a ruckman and I spoke to Laycock today, that's a fact," Sheedy told Fairfax Media.

"I think we've got to at least get three mature players."

See tomorrow's Advocate for Martin Agatyn's interview with Jason Laycock.

Promising signs for young Dockers

September 8th 2010 10:32
The Burnie Football Club were looking like they were done for before the season started, they had lost a lot of players and were tipped to win the wooden spoon, and then Round One they managed to upset Devonport and walk away with a win with former Magpie Brentyn Milverton winning the game for them. But there are other signs there as well, the fact the Dockers did not finish bottom, and came close to playing finals showed a lot of pundits were very much wrong here.

There are problems around the club, but it seems they are slowly working their way out, but what happens if there is another exodus? Well that could possibly kill the Dockers, but the Dockers right now have some good signs, they have some young players, managed to recruit some players Cameron Upton, Brentyn Milverton have both been good for the Dockers
