Promising signs for young Dockers

September 8th 2010 10:32
The Burnie Football Club were looking like they were done for before the season started, they had lost a lot of players and were tipped to win the wooden spoon, and then Round One they managed to upset Devonport and walk away with a win with former Magpie Brentyn Milverton winning the game for them. But there are other signs there as well, the fact the Dockers did not finish bottom, and came close to playing finals showed a lot of pundits were very much wrong here.

There are problems around the club, but it seems they are slowly working their way out, but what happens if there is another exodus? Well that could possibly kill the Dockers, but the Dockers right now have some good signs, they have some young players, managed to recruit some players Cameron Upton, Brentyn Milverton have both been good for the Dockers.

The Dockers also stood their ground on Justin Plapp who wanted to strap on the boots for Box Hill as he is now an assistant coach at the Hawks. Plapp who left the Dockers was allowed to coach but suddenly wanted to come out of retirement, and was told the Hawks needed $15,000 before the Dockers would clear him to play.

And that was fair enough as well, if someone is going to retire from one club, head over the mainland and take up a coaching role and then want to play, his former team should get some compensation for this as well.

Now he should be able to play again if he wishes, but whats the point? He's not really getting any younger and the Hawks should focus on young talent, and not a player who is aging, injury prone, and probably going to cost them $15k.

The Dockers are a chance of playing finals next year, they missed the finals by 8 points and pushed Glenorchy to the limit, Glenorchy also suffered a bit of an exodus in a way, it was not a massive player walk out, they had injuries and had also lost a couple of players.

But watch out for Burnie in 2011, they are going to be there abouts next season, as the season starts to end there will be a season review and as the lists change there will be a season preview as well.

Burnie win slips away

NOT even a six-goal final term from the Burnie Dockers was enough to snatch victory against Launceston on Saturday, going down by 12 points.

Written off at the start of the season, Burnie has played like a true finals team over the last month, with three straight wins, but this one slipped just out of reach.

"We were beaten but weren't disgraced," Burnie coach Brent Plant said.

Plant also said there weren't enough guys willing to get to the next level.

"We can use today as a huge stepping stone and we can learn," he said.

A stiff breeze met both sides at West Park and Launceston used it to perfection.

Burnie had plenty of opportunities to score, but only managed one goal for the quarter.

Adrian and Brian Finch were able to find space and cause a lot of headaches.

Two first-quarter goals to Adrian had Launceston out to a 30-point lead at quarter time.

Burnie youngster Rudy Barrett did a brilliant job of keeping goal- kicking machine Brian Finch to just two goals for the game, ensuring his influence on the game was at a minimum.

Stephen Blizzard did another stellar job at centre half back on Jason Edwards.

With the wind in the second quarter, Burnie was on a mission to erase the 20-point deficit.

But skill errors and ability to adapt to the wet cost it several scoring opportunities and only brought back the margin by one point to still be 19 points behind at half-time.

Launceston looked to put the game beyond doubt in the third as the lead blew out beyond 50 points.

Launceston backed its run and was able to make all scoring opportunities count.

Brentyn Milverton was able to sneak forward and booted four late goals for Burnie.

The Dockers had the momentum in the final term with the wind, but time ran out on what could have been a memorable win.

BURNIE has been one of the most improved sides in the Tasmanian State League in recent weeks but the young Dockers will find out just how much they have improved when they meet Launceston at West Park today.

The Blues started the season slowly but have won their last six and are second on the ladder.

Burnie started the season much better and defeated Launceston early, but the Blues are a much better side than in that encounter.

Launceston will also be out to turn around a fairly poor record at West Park.

Elijah Taylor is back in the Dockers' line-up and his goal kicking ability will be an asset today.

Youngster Brodie Mihocek has impressed since making his debut a few weeks ago and could sneak under the Launceston radar and bag a few valuable majors as well.

On-ballers Luke Shackleton and Darren Banham and midfielder Kade Munday have been great leaders on-field for the Dockers over the past few weeks and will need to do the same today to give the home side any chance of victory.

The battle between Banham and dynamic Blues skipper Scott Stephens will be a highlight of the match.

Banham will require the best of his defensive play to give him the edge.

Matthew Stephenson has also been good in the ruck for the Dockers all season, but will come up against an athletic opponent Andrea Miar.

Stephenson will need to be at his best to nullify his spring-heeled opponent.

Rudy Barrett will have a big job defending Blues goalsneak Brian Finch, who has kicked some big totals this season, but will have good support from Tyson Weller and James Plant.

A summer of turmoil? What turmoil? One would think that when looking at how the Dockers went about upsetting the favourites Devonport at Devonport Oval underlights on Good Friday. The Dockers lead all day to runout winners 9.10.64 to Devonport 9.7.6. The final score was actually a Burnie win by 1 behind, but the umpires got together at the end of the game and rounded it up.

To add insult to injury in the game former Magpie Brentyn Milverton who crossed over to Coastal Rivals Burnie in the offseason booted a goal to help set up this upset win. The Dockers are not expected to win many games this season, and are widely tipped as wooden spooners by many football followers after the crisis that hit the club when they gave the coaching position to Brent Plant. Well this seems to have been all eased with a very hard fought win

A small bit about the Dockers

March 30th 2010 09:09
The Burnie Dockers were formed as a result of a merger between former TFL Statewide League club Burnie Hawks (formerly known as Cooee) and NTFL club the Burnie Tigers.
After several years of bitter hatred in the city between the two rival clubs, both clubs were fledgling by the early 1990s and were struggling financially.
