Backing for KGV plan

AFL Tasmania has backed Glenorchy's push for a community-based sports precinct around KGV, but has stressed the soon-to-be completed twin ovals project at Kingston will be the only ground to host any AFL matches in the South apart from Bellerive Oval.

The Mercury yesterday reported the Magpies were putting together a submission for a $9 million Federal Government grant, which would firstly redevelop the KGV Oval, before building a precinct that would eventually house six other sports and a community-based recreation, fitness and rehabilitation centre.

Club director and head of strategic planning John McCann also flagged the exciting possibility of the venue hosting pre-season AFL matches.

However, AFL Tasmania general manager Scott Wade said the two ovals at Kingston behind the Kingborough Sports Centre will be ready to host local football next season.

Once the player and public facilities are completed it will be ready for pre-season AFL fixtures from 2012.

"One of the great challenges for KGV and Bellerive Oval is in the summer they both host grade cricket and Bellerive, cricket at all levels," Wade said.

"But Kingborough, the main oval is purpose built for footy.

"From AFL Tasmania's point of view, Kingborough will host any pre-season AFL activity in southern Tasmania and the development is coming along nicely.

"I'm not critical of KGV.

"The concept of what we would describe as a community centre of excellence is fantastic and we will be fully supportive.

"To be realistic though it's not likely to be hosting too much AFL football.

"Outside of Bellerive it's going to be the next best footy venue in southern Tasmania."

Last year, the Federal Government announced it would inject $4 million to the Kingborough Sports Complex, which contains two ovals one for cricket and one for football.

Kingborough Council general manager Paul West said yesterday the tender for the buildings has just been let, with work expected to start soon.

"Last week we let the tender for the buildings, which will include the player and public facilities plus a 200 seat function centre," West said.

"We hope that will be completed towards the end of February, early March next year.

"The way we are going, we would be hoping if we are going to have a pre-season AFL fixture it would be for the pre-season of 2012."

AFL Tasmania has rescheduled the match between Clarence and Hobart at Bellerive on Sunday to Saturday.
