Baby Magpies show guts

GOAL-LESS and 25 points down at quarter-time, Glenorchy's season was sinking in front of its eyes.

The Magpies were coming off three consecutive losses and were already a game outside the top six.

But they have a long history of never saying die and rallied tremendously, dominating Hobart for the final three quarters to win by 13 points, 15.9 (99) to 13.8 (86).

The final margin severely flattered the Tigers, who trailed by 33 points in the last term before kicking four of the last five goals.

"We had two more debutants today, we've had 13 debutants to date and the majority of them [were] in the side today," Glenorchy coach Ben Reid said.

"We had eight or nine who have played less than five games of footy in the team, so it is a very young side.

"They haven't really dropped their bundle any time during the year.

"The boys have tried, they've busted their guts, there has been circumstances that have transpired that haven't been ideal."

With such a young side, the Magpies' leaders stepped up.

Captain Jesse Crouch kicked three goals and was instrumental in the turnaround, Brayden Webb dominated around the middle and around half back, and Michael Darcy (five goals) and Jaye Bowden (three goals) were effective targets up forward.

For Hobart, it was a demoralising loss because it has now wasted two excellent chances to jump two games clear of Glenorchy in the top six.

But last week's loss to previously last-placed Lauderdale and yesterday's defeat by the Magpies means only percentage separates the Tigers and Glenorchy.

The Tigers had their chances. Jeremy Howe missed a set shot from 40m directly in front which would have given the Tigers the lead just before three-quarter time, and

Michael Cassidy kicked a point from the top of the square that would have made the margin nine points early in the last term.

"We've gone from chocolates to boiled lollies," Hobart coach Graham Fox said.

"This young group has just got to realise you have to work hard week in, week out and the proof of that was today against Glenorchy.

"They [Howe and Cassidy's misses] are the big moments we have got to take and, each time we missed them, they scored at the other end so that's a 20-point turnaround.

"Like I keep saying, in the pressure situation we have to make those shots and until we do that, we will continue to struggle."

Meanwhile Launceston's Brian Finch created history at Aurora Stadium yesterday, becoming the first player to kick 10 goals in a game since the restart of the state league.

Finch's big bag was the highlight as the Blues registered their fourth win in a row, this time an 83-point hiding of Lauderdale.

After a dip in form, North Hobart got back on the winner's list with a courageous 21-point win over Burnie at West Park.
