A Walk Down Memory Lane: 2009 TSL Grand Final

April 1st 2010 10:49
The Grand Final replay will be played Monday Night under lights, for the first time ever the Magpies and Roos play with the lights on, neither side are strangers to playing under lights, but this is a first for Bellerive Oval, never before has a TSL Game been played under lights at the venue, and to mark the occasion and since this is the biggest game this weekend, I have gone through the previews from last season, and decided to post it up to get ready for the big clash.

CAPTAINS

Glenorchy

Shane Piuselli(c)

A vital part of the Magpies line up since arriving at the club, Shane Piuselli was made captain this season and despite missing 10 weeks with a broken collar bone he has been a tremendous leader of the club. Taking over from Blacky Curran, the Magpies are in well experienced hands coming into the 2009 TSL Grand Final.

Clarence

Nick Paine (c)

An athletic running machine that runs hard at the ball and gathers possessions at will. Good mark for his size and loves a goal. You will often find him on the bottom of the pack where the hard ball is won. Winner of many prestigious individual awards, usually best player in any big match or final!

Paine has been a veteran of the Roos since he came to the Roos in 2001, he is the brother of Tasmanian and Australian ODI Wicker keeper Tim Paine.

SUMMARY

The return of the TSL will come down to this, the Southern rivals Glenorchy and Clarence meeting again in a massive Grand Final. It has been a dream return to statewide football and now we are going to have an epic battle at Bellerive Oval for the premiership, Clarence have not yet lost a game at Bellerive, Glenorchy has no beaten Clarence at Bellerive this season. Glenorchy have started to win at Bellerive Oval, Glenorchy do have the wood over the Roos this season beating them both times at KGV Oval this season. Their first win over the Roos was a hard fought win that has seen the Magpies win 12 staight game since that time.

Clarence have had a long finals campign, coming up against North Hobart in the Elimination Final at Bellerive, they then faced Devonport who had to battle for their fnals life more than once this season at Bellerive oval, and last week a hard fought win against Burnie at Aurora Stadium has made the Premiership deam stay alive for the boys from the Eastern Shore.

Glenorchy, have only had to encounter the one side thi finals series, Burnie at Bellerive, and they disposed of them easily by 71 points, they had the week off when Clarence played North Hobart and then played at Bellerive when the Roos played Devonport and now a fresh Glenorchy are ready to pounce against the Roos this weekend.

The Magpies and the Roos are playing in their 6th Grand Final against each other, Clarence holding the wood over the Magpies 3 wns to 2 the last time they met in a Grand Final was 2007 where Glenorchy managed to over come the loss the year before to win the game 14.22.106 to Clarence 4.14.38.

Glenorchy are going to make club history, if they win the flag, it will be the first and the only time they have ever won 3 flags in a row, the Roos, they are looking to win their first flag since 2006, and their first Statewide League flag since 2000 when they beat North Launceston. Glenorchy's last was also against North Launceston in 1999.

The Roos will be happy to be back at home this week, after surviving a tough game last weekend, and only getting over the line after Justin Plapp missed with the final kick of the game. So now we get into the game and a lot of people have stated that Glenorchy are going to run away with the flag, as they have had a fantastic season, already captured 2 flags in a row.

The Magpies face a selection nightmare this week, Shane Piuselli has been cleared to play so that has left them scratching their heads do they bring back Ryan Harwood, and drop out Matthew Dilger, or do they leave him out of the side and persist with Dilger. Harwood has tackled Webberley and I would call their battle even, with Harwood taking the points in their first contest at KGV Oval, and Webberley taking the second by a minor percentage.

Glenorchy's backline are going to need to shut down both Drury and Dutton, Jamie Kaye may get Brad Dutton, and Ben Curley may get Drury and they may switch there may even see Shayne Moles get the job on one of them at parts during the game. The Roos will be out to stop Marcus Parker, Clinton French, and Jonathon Bowring from the Magpies, Bowring who has had a fantastic season for the Magpies has been playing in the middle and in the forward line in various roles, previously he has played as a defender. Clinton French has been sneaking up forward and finding some goals.

Cameron Blight will more then likely take young forward David Hunt, while Swan will take Bowring early before sneaking up into the middle, maybe rotating through the middle should the Magpies need that. Daniel Archer should be taking Marcus Parker who has started to make a name for himself, at only 19 he has become a vital part of the Magpies forward line.

The midfield battle is going to be something to watch, Glenorchy's midfield has a habit of rotating between there and the forward line, Clarence can take Cameron Thurley and throw him down forward, they can throw him in the forward line and he is damaging, Ben Setchell is damaging as well all over the park. Glenorchy's midfield is lead by Vice Captain Jaye Bowden who has been superb all season, he has a habit of sparking the Magpies, he almost got the Magpies back into the game against Launceston early in the season.

You cannot take your eyes off of him he can bob up and steal a goal or two, then you have Clinton French, who likes to sneak around the field mainly into the Magpies forward line where he steals himself some goals before heading back into the midfield, the freeness the Magpies have to add in Jesse Crouch and Shane Piuselli as well as Jake Cox has made them a dangerous side this season.

Clarence have Josh Green, and Clinton Riley, as well as having Jeromey Webberley who hides down back as well. Both teams have been pretty even in their matches this season, which is going to make the fist TSL Grand Final a memorable one.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jonathon Bowring (Glenorchy)

Grand Final time, and it's time to highlight two from both sides that are going to be important throughout the clash, and I have picked Jonathon Bowring, first for Glenorchy, he has been a solide contributor to the Glenorchy side in 2009, and has had his best season to date, and with that he is the only Glenorchy player in the top 10 of the Tassie Medal Bowring wil be a man that the Magpies will hope has a good game, one of many on the day, a good experienced head.

Shane Piuselli (Glenorchy)

The captain of the Magpies will lead them into his first Grand Final as such, the Magpie veteran and previous winner of the William Leitch, Piuselli returned to the line up against Burnie and did not look like he had missed a step, he was able to grab the ball from the ruck tap and run in and kick goals. The Magpies will hope to get a lot out of their experienced heads in this game.

Cameron Thurley (Clarence)

He has been one of Clarence's best this season, he has been a vital member of the side, playing in the midfield, defense, and in the forward line, he manages to collect a lot of the ball and he never wastes it when he does. Thurley has the ability to cause the magpies a fair few headaches, he is one of a few that the Magpies need to find a way to stop.

Ben Setchell (Clarence)

Like Thurley he has been fantastic for the Roos this season, he has gathered and used the ball well throughout has been a key addition to the Roo, and he may hold the key to their premiership hopes as well, I think he and Thurley are going to be the men in the middle the Magpies need to make sure have a bad game.

QUESTION MARKS

25 years ago, Clarence managed to get over the Magpies in the 1984 Grand Final, this time they are at Bellerive, will the Magpies be worried about this? Glenorchy played the oval well against Burnie, they carved up the Dockers and made them look like a second rate side at times, can they get out there and get the jump on the Roos, like they did the Dockers?

A spirited win by the Roos last week saw them book a date with the Magpies, but how much has that game affected the Roos, both psychically and mentally? The Roos battled for every part of the game, got back into the game and got home, do the Roos have any energy in the tank, or did they spend it all in a brusing encouter with the Dockers?

WHO WILL WIN AND WHY

Glenorchy are going into this game as favourites, they have gone from 4th to 3rd to 2nd and then they finished top, in season that as expected to be dominated by Launcestion who are not appearing only in the Reserves this weekend. Clarence do have the wood over the Magpies at Bellerive Oval, winning their only meeting and having not lost at this venue all season, but that's going to end now. Glenorchy has had an easy run into the Grand Final, they came out beat the Dockers, and then they relaxed for most of the last quarter, where as Clarence, they had to play North Hobart in the miserable conditions in the Elimination final.

The Roos then had to face Devonport, in both games they may have gotten over the line easily, but they had to run, they had to work. Once that game was over last week they had to travel to Aurora Stadium and play Burnie, who got out to a big lead and the Roos were forced to fight back. The last quarter was a goal for goal affair before the Roos found their opportunity to pull away and with a lucky miss by Justin Plapp the Roos have entered the Grand Final.

Glenorchy's been playing good football, at the break they were facing an uphill battle after that shock loss to Hobart before the State of Origin break, then they came out and they got on top of Clarence at KGV Oval, Clarence in both their encounters after Glenorchy has gotten out to a big lead has had to try and chase it down. Their last encounter they got within a goal, and that was when the Magpies had to stand tall under the onsaught of pressure being applied.

Glenorchy scored the first two goals and the pressure was back on the Roos and that was when they started to fade away, Glenorchy cannot afford to let the Roos into the game. Not at Bellerive, if the Roos are given a chance, however small they aer going to run with it and the Magpies will need to work hard to put them away.

The key I feel for the Magpies is to start with a strong first Quarter, put the game an arms reach away from Clarence and then add more pressure. If Harwood is selected, I'd expect them to battle at various stages during the game. This game is also a chance for that young Glenorchy forward line to stand tall, with Dutton being the Hudson medalist this year as the leading goalkicker they are going to need to keep him from taking shots on goal.

The Roos are a classy team, the Magpies too are a classy team, both have a massive rivalry that has been going on for years, what else could you want on Grand final day but traditional rivals that have a massive hate for each other, ready to smash, crash, and bash their way to a flag?

PREDICTION
Glenorchy by 14 points

Review

Clarence walked away as premiers winning by a goal, kicked by Jeromey Webberley, the Magpies came from 48 points down at half time to almost steal a historic premiership win, but the Roos held strong and goaled late to take the game away. A Grand Final that promised so much before the day, almost delivered nothing until after half time the tide started to turn and the Magpies took flight. Bad kicking was the thing that cost Glenorchy late, and the Magpies were left to rue the missed opportunities.
