A finals contender?

May 30th 2010 07:43
Hobart has had a mixed start to the season, they managed to upset the Demons last weekend putting them into the top 6 for the first time since the start of the Tasmanian State League. Yesterday Lauderdale who were soundly beaten by the Magpies at Bellerive last week came out and managed to take the points away from the Tigers at their home ground of the TCA Ground, something that most pundits wouldn't have tipped.

Before the start of the season the Tigers were hoping to play finals, they are a young side they have had key injuries in different stages of this season, they took Devonport and Clarence to their limits in the first halves at the TCA Ground this season but were wiped out in the second half. Even yesterday the Tigers held the Bombers scoreless in one of the quarters but were soundly beaten, the Tigers play Glenorchy who were soundly beaten as well yesterday, the winner next week could possibly see themselves in the six at the end of the round.

Hobart are a game clear but they play Glenorchy at KGV Oval, last season the Tigers beat the Magpies, and they were the last to do so last season until Clarence got over the line in the Grand final. Earlier in the season the Magpies flogged the Tigers at the TCA Ground, and with a possible inclusions to the Glenorchy side it might see them turn their 3 game losing streak around.

The Tigers also flogged Burnie which has seen the Dockers who looked like putting all the claims they were done for the year behind them sending them crashing out of the contention for now. But are these Tigers contenders? I think they are pretty close, for this year anyway they are improving their young players are stepping up, but they need to stop the fadeouts which are killing them. Though their dropoff against Clarence can be excused the Roos are a strong side, and they aren't going to let anyone get the better of them for the whole game and they showed what a lethal team they were booting 13 goals in one quarter against the Tigers.

I am still debating whether or not Zeb Graham is really up for the TSL, as well as Todd Willing, and possibly Tom Friend, who seems to not be able to stick around too long in the Tigers side. I think that Willing needs to do some extra running, he has looked a bit out of shape this season, much like Glenorchy's Michael Darcy. Zeb Graham may need to do the same to keep himself around he has looked pretty decent in patches, but needs to show more.

If the Tigers are to beat Glenorchy they need to play the game out and not fade out, sure the Magpies are not the best this season with the loses they have had but they are still going to punish you if you give them a way into any game this season. A true sign of this was when they were 26 points down in the first few minutes of the game against Burnie in the last quarter and they turned it into a 20 point win.

9 games into 2010 and I think they are close to playing finals, if they miss out this season I am sure they are going to press for the finals next season, they have to beat Glenorchy to keep them going, after the loss to Lauderdale last week their spot is up for grabs, and Burnie are still around the corner as well;.
